A Tombstone is a furniture item that drops when a player dies. It can then be retrieved and used much like a sign or as a form of decoration. By default, it contains the death message generated based on how the player died. Tombstones created will show the real-life date the player died.

Upon death, a Tombstone will bounce around until it lands on a suitable 2-tile wide surface, where it will place itself. If a Tombstone cannot find a place to land (due to lack of suitable space), it cannot be retrieved and will eventually despawn. Two Tombstones cannot land on each other.

Variants are chosen randomly upon death. Golden Tombstones drop when the player had more than 10 GC in their inventory.[1]

Having 4–8 Tombstones placed in close proximity will gradually darken and desaturate the environment. Five or more Tombstones placed in close proximity will generate a Graveyard mini-biome. Breaking a Tombstone may spawn a Ghost off-screen.

In Hardcore, Tombstones cannot be easily obtained because death is permanent. Instead, NPCs in worlds with Hardcore characters will drop Tombstones when they are killed. Variants are still chosen randomly; all NPCs drop a normal Tombstone except the Merchant and Tax Collector who drop a golden variant.[2]

In For the worthy and Get fixed boi worlds, the Tombstone projectiles dropped by players (but not those dropped by NPCs in Hardcore) deal 140 / 280 / 420 damage to players and 70 damage to NPCs, enemies, and critters.

Because Tombstones create Graveyards, and mark a place where a player had died, they are highlighted by Dangersense Potions.

Abigail's Flower can be uncommonly found as a plant growing on grass near a placed Tombstone, regardless of world progression. Its spawn chance is increased in a Constant world.

Notes

  • Tombstones are always dropped when the player dies, regardless of the difficulty setting.
  • In worlds with a Hardcore character, the Angler and Princess will not drop a Tombstone, as they leave instead of being slain. The Traveling Merchant will drop a Tombstone despite not being a town NPC, but the Old Man and Skeleton Merchant will not.

Tips

  • Tombstones can be easily farmed by placing Hellstone or Meteorite directly under the world spawn point and then creating a new character. The player will die and respawn continuously, creating a Tombstone each time. Alternatively, it can be done by digging straight down from the spawn point so the player will die from fall damage.
    • The spawn point can also be flooded with water to drown the player, but it is less efficient than other methods.
  • In Journey Mode, even when the enemy spawn rate is set to 0× the normal rate, mining up Tombstones may still cause Ghosts to spawn.

Trivia

  • Golden Tombstones, like all other tombstones, have no sell value.
  • There is no golden variant of the Obelisk in any version of the game.
