Conveyor Belts (Clockwise and Counter Clockwise) are blocks that are always dropped by Conveyor Slimes including in pre-Hardmode, or can be purchased from the Steampunker for 5 SC each in Hardmode.

They have the unique ability to move certain entities in their respective direction upon contact. The following entities are affected by Conveyor Belts:

Falling blocks (Sand, Slush, Silt, Shell Piles, Cracked Dungeon Bricks, and Ash on For the Worthy and Zenith worlds) remain in item form when falling onto Conveyor Belts.

Conveyor Belts will remain active from the moment they are placed. Being powered with Wire reverses their direction, toggling between Clockwise and Counter Clockwise. Their direction can also be switched from the crafting menu. Like most other blocks, they can be shaped into half-blocks and angled slopes using a hammer, allowing for diagonal movement. Conveyor Belts can also carry items vertically.

Notes

  • Conveyor Belts move entities at 13 mph.[1] This can be seen on the Stopwatch while walking into solid objects.
  • Conveyor Belts can carry items through water and lava, provided the lava does not destroy the item. Conveyor Belts can also carry items unaffected by gravity (e.g. souls), but only if they happen to drop low enough to touch the Conveyor Belt.
  • When spawning enemies on conveyor belts, the game will use the block directly underneath the Conveyor Belt to determine what type of enemy to spawn.[2]
    • This is different from other blocks such as platforms, planter boxes, and bars, which use a similar mechanic for determining the spawned enemy type, as these blocks search the 29 tiles below them instead of just the one block directly underneath, stopping at the first solid block that is not a platform, planter box or metal bar.
  • The underside of a Conveyor Belt will not move the player if the player is using the Gravitation Potion or the Gravity Globe.

Tips

  • An alternate method of transporting items and entities is a hoik. It can be preferable to Conveyor Belts as they can move any enemy, they move entities much faster, and can be built at the start of the game. The downsides are the steep learning curve and complex setups.
  • A skybridge made of Conveyor Belts can be used to automatically farm Fallen Stars. Due to the Conveyor Belt's slow speed, not all stars will reach the end of the Conveyor Belt in time to be collected (especially on larger worlds). A Conveyor Belt spanning an entire large world and ending at the world center should collect about 60% of Fallen Stars that fall on a given night.

History

  • Desktop 1.4.5.0:
    • Now carry items upwards.
    • Falling blocks now remain in their item form on Conveyor Belts.
    • When spawning NPCs on Conveyor Belts, the block directly below the belt is now used to determine which NPC to spawn. Previously, the game would use the first non-Conveyor Belt block downwards in a 29-tile range.
    • Critters, regular Mimics, Lost Girls, Slimes, Gnomes, and Bound NPCs are now affected by Conveyor Belts.
    • Antlions can now spit Sand while on Conveyor Belts (though they cannot be moved).
    • Are now dropped by Conveyor Slimes.
    • Can now switch direction by crafting.
  • Desktop 1.4.0.1:
    • Fixed an issue where Minecart Tracks that ran directly into Conveyor Belts would cause the Minecart to derail.
    • Fixed an issue where Conveyor Belts overrode biome spawns.
    • Fixed an issue where Falling Stars would clip through Conveyor Belts and end up embedded inside blocks.
