Spectre armor is a Hardmode, post-Plantera armor set that offers magic weapon boosts.
The set consists of the Spectre Robe and Spectre Pants, as well as two different headpieces, the Spectre Hood and the Spectre Mask.
Equipping the full set causes small white orbs to manifest whenever the player hits an enemy with a magic weapon. The effect of these orbs depends on the headpiece option chosen: The Spectre Mask causes the orbs to act as homing projectiles, while the Spectre Hood causes the orbs to travel to a player, healing them.
Spectre Mask set bonus: Homing orb projectiles spawn when dealing magic damage to an enemy, which attack nearby enemies, or the same enemy. The orbs deal 100% of the damage dealt by the magic weapon fired, before it is doubled by a critical hit (if a critical hit deals 200 damage, the orb will have 100 base damage). The orb projectile itself can deal critical hits.
Spectre Hood set bonus: Lifesteal orbs spawn when dealing magic damage to an enemy, which fly to the player and restore health by 20% of damage done (e.g. dealing 50 magic damage heals 10 health). In multiplayer, the player with the lowest health on the team is healed instead. Equipping the full set with the Spectre Hood incurs a 40% magic damage decrease.
Crafting a full set with one headpiece requires 54 Spectre Bars (27 Ectoplasm and 270 Chlorophyte Ore). The full set with both headpieces requires 66 Spectre Bars (33 Ectoplasm and 330 Chlorophyte Ore).

Notes
- Both set bonuses have a limit to their efficiency. They are both limited by a related numeric stat, which has a cap, recharges by a fixed value per second, and reduces by a certain amount after triggering the set bonus[1][2]:
- The Spectre Hood's healing is a lifesteal effect, and is limited by a stat called
lifeSteal
. Its recharge rate and maximum value are shown in the following table. When a projectile deals damage, the game will calculate the amount of health it will restore, and for per health that would be restored, lifeSteal
is reduced by 1. This means that the amount of health restored per second during constant combat equals to the recharge rate, while the initial healing burst capped by the maximum value.

- The amount of health restored by the healing orb is related to the source projectile's damage and the number of targets the projectile has hit, and can be calculated with the following formula:
Health restored = Damage of the projectile × [0.2 - 0.05 × Hits[3])]
- Note that when wearing the Spectre armor with Hood, all projectiles that dealt damage will reduce
lifeSteal
, but only projectiles that deal magic damage will spawn a healing orb.
- The Spectre Mask's damage orbs is limited by a stat called
ghostDmg
. Its recharge rate and maximum value are shown in the following table. For each point of magic damage dealt, ghostDmg
is reduced by 1. This means that during constant combat, the extra DPS from damage orbs is capped by the recharge rate, while the initial damage burst capped by the maximum value.

- If an attack does not do at least 2 damage while the Spectre Mask is equipped, a damaging orb will not appear. If an attack does not do at least 5 damage while the Spectre Hood is equipped, a healing orb will not appear.
- Wearing the full set with either helmet makes the player translucent.
- Dyes are not as visible on a full set of Spectre armor as they are on other armor sets.
- As the rest of the Spectre armor grants a total of 15% increased damage, the total effect of wearing the Spectre Hood is only a 25% magic damage reduction.
Tips
- One of the most efficient ways to play with this armor is by owning both the Spectre Hood and the Spectre Mask and switching between them, depending on the situation. This way the player will be able to both keep themselves alive and deal continuous high damage.
- The average DPS of the Spectre Mask's damage orbs cannot be increased beyond the cap through damage bonuses, but it can be increased through critical strike chance bonuses. As a result, accessory builds that emphasize critical strike chance will be stronger than usual, and weapons with boosted critical rates like the Stellar Tune and Staff of Earth will increase the potency of the set bonus.
- Since the base DPS of the damage orbs is essentially a fixed value (400 DPS at max), the Spectre Mask set is a good fit for defensive mages, since the loss of damage from running Warding modifiers instead of Menacing/Lucky does not affect the damage dealt by the set bonus. Using defensive accessories also synergizes well with the Spectre Hood set, since its effect is also defensive.
- Spectre armor with the Spectre Hood is widely considered useless against the Moon Lord(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions), whose Moon Bite debuff disables lifesteal effects unless one moves far enough to avoid his tongue to latch on. However, such strategy is usually ineffective since the Moon Lord can teleport to the player if they move too far from him.
- The lifesteal cap can be somewhat bypassed by dealing an enormous amount of damage in a single hit, such as with the Nebula Blaze. This can be useful when fighting the Moon Lord, to maximize the amount of health gained after Moon Bite wears off but before it is reapplied.
- The combined effects of Mana Sickness and the Spectre Hood's damage reduction will render many magic weapons too weak to be effective, so players should find an alternate means of restoring mana.
- Magic Cuffs or Celestial Cuffs synergize well with the Spectre Hood as they capitalize on any damage taken; with a highly-damaging weapon like the Razorpine, it is possible to maintain both health and mana at comfortable levels.
Trivia
- The Spectre Hood's stat decrease is only caused indirectly, via the set bonus.
- Spectre is another word for ghost or spirit, alluding to the fact that the Ectoplasm, required for crafting the armor set, is dropped by Dungeon Spirits.
- Although Re-Logic is based in the United States, spectre is the British spelling of the word, with the American spelling being specter.
