The Morning Star is a Hardmode, post-Plantera whip. Like other whips, it causes minions and sentries to focus on the last-struck enemy and increases their damage against the target by 8. Uniquely, it also grants minions and sentries the ability to deal critical hits at a fixed 12% chance.
If the Morning Star hits multiple targets in a single attack, the damage dealt by each consecutive hit will be reduced by 5%. The Morning Star has a 1/200 (0.5%) / 1/100 (1%) chance of being dropped by Blue Armored Bones, Rusty Armored Bones, and Hell Armored Bones in the post-Plantera Dungeon.
Its best modifier is Legendary.

Notes
- When paired with Lightning Aura and wearing Monk armor or Shinobi Infiltrator armor, the critical strike chance granted by the set bonus and the summon tag critical chance granted by the whip are not simply added up; instead, they will be treated as two independent events. The final critical strike chance would be about 26.67% (Monk armor) / 34% (Shinobi Infiltrator armor).[1]
Tips
- The Kaleidoscope is an indirect upgrade to this whip, having more base damage, higher range, and more than double the tag damage. However, it lacks the flat crowd control capabilities of the Morning Star, gives a smaller critical strike chance, and has lower knockback.
- The Morning Star and Kaleidoscope have the unique ability to grant minions the ability to deal critical hits. Though the boost is relatively low, it is nevertheless a noticeable increase in damage, especially with a large number of minions. Both whips can also be stacked to further increase critical strike chance.
- The Morning Star can be farmed right after Plantera is defeated, making it an early upgrade to pre-Plantera whips.
- Even though it has a slow swing speed, the Morning Star makes up for this with its very high base damage and knockback.
- Switching between the Morning Star and a Durendal or Dark Harvest to activate their buff can improve the Morning Star's low swing speed, as well as stacking the special tag effects on a single target.
- The Dark Harvest's increased swing speed on hit allows it to put out around the same DPS as the Morning Star; with specialized melee builds (such as equipping melee speed-boosting accessories), the Dark Harvest can potentially surpass it in DPS so long as hits are dealt. However, the Morning Star surpasses it in terms of improving minion damage against a single target due to its summon tag damage bonus and crit boost.
Trivia
- The Morning Star has the highest knockback of all whips and the lowest damage penalty per hit.
- The whip's name and look may be a reference to the Morning Star whip from the Castlevania video game series, where it is typically the base form of the legendary Vampire Killer whip wielded and passed down by the members of the Belmont clan.
- That whip is itself inspired by an actual medieval weapon, the morning star. This weapon does not resemble a whip. Instead, it is a club-like weapon consisting of a ball attached to a shaft and adorned with a varying number of spikes. However, the Morning Star from Castlevania (and, by extension, Terraria) is technically a type of military flail, even though Terraria does not consider it a flail in-game.
- The interior of the whip seems to be made of enchanted cobalt, similar to other weapons in the Dungeon (like the Muramasa and Blue Moon). This is visible when it is extended, and also in the cross-shaped particles it leaves, identical to those made by the Muramasa.
