Fishing poles are tools used with bait for fishing.

Types

There are (Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) 11 / (Old-gen console version) 9 / (3DS version) 8 different fishing poles, 4 of which are craftable, (Desktop, Console, Old-gen console and Mobile versions) 4 / (3DS version) 3 are sold or awarded by NPCs, (Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) 1 is dropped by enemies and (Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) 2 / (Old-gen console and 3DS versions) 1 found in Chests or crates.

Notes

• The only way to get the Obsidifish and Flarefin Koi is by fishing in lava. On the  Desktop version,  Console version, and  Mobile version, any fishing pole can fish in lava using Lava Critters caught in the underworld or by having a Lavaproof Fishing Hook equipped. The Hotline Fishing Hook can still be used to fish in lava with any bait on all versions, however.
• The Chum Caster will increase the chance of hooking an enemy during a Blood Moon from a 1/6 (16.67%) chance to 1/3 (33.33%) chance.
• The color of the line can be changed by equipping a string in vanity slots.
• The appearance of a fishing pole's bobber can be changed by equipping a Fishing Bobber accessory.

Trivia

• (Old-gen console and 3DS versions) Since the Golden Fishing Rod cannot be used to fish in lava, the best possible fishing setup in lava is slightly less efficient than the best fishing setup in water/honey.

 Desktop version

• Desktop 1.4.4: Now shows the currently selected "ammo" (bait) by the cursor.

• Desktop 1.4.1:
  • Increased drop chance of Chum Caster from 1/24 (4.17%) to 1/8 (12.5%).
  • Increased Fishing Power of the Scarab Fishing Rod from 25% to 30%.
  • Increased Fishing Power of the Fiberglass Fishing Pole from 27% to 30%, increased odds of finding from 1/30 to 1/15.
  • Increased Fishing Power of the Mechanic's Rod from 30% to 35%, can now be purchased in pre-Hardmode, and can be purchased in 4 different Moon Phases.
