Fishing poles are tools used with bait for fishing.

Types

There are 11 different fishing poles, 4 of which are craftable, 4 are sold or awarded by NPCs, 1 is dropped by enemies, and 2 are found in Chests or crates.

  • Can fish in lava.
  • When used in lava alongside the Lavaproof Fishing Hook or Lavaproof Tackle Bag, this item increases catch frequency by more than 50%.
  • Can be obtained only in Hardmode, but quests finished before also count toward the requirement of 25.

Notes

  • The Hotline Fishing Hook is the only fishing pole that can be used to fish in lava without other equipment, where the Obsidifish and Flarefin Koi can be caught. Fishing in lava with any of the other fishing poles requires equipping a Lavaproof Fishing Hook (or its upgrade) or using critters from The Underworld as bait.
  • The color of the line can be changed by equipping a string in vanity slots.
  • The appearance of a fishing pole's bobber can be changed by equipping a Fishing Bobber accessory.

History

  • Desktop 1.4.4: Now shows the currently selected "ammo" (bait) by the cursor.
  • Desktop 1.4.1:
    • Increased drop chance of Chum Caster from 1/24 (4.17%) to 1/8 (12.5%).
    • Increased Fishing Power of the Scarab Fishing Rod from 25% to 30%.
    • Increased Fishing Power of the Fiberglass Fishing Pole from 27% to 30% and increased the chance of obtaining it from 3.27% to 6.53%.
    • Increased Fishing Power of the Mechanic's Rod from 30% to 35%. It can now be purchased in pre-Hardmode and during four different moon phases, instead of only in Hardmode during a Waning Crescent moon.
    • The Sitting Duck's Fishing Pole can now only be purchased after Skeletron has been defeated.
  • Desktop 1.3.2: Fixed exploit allowing the player to throw multiple hooks at once.
  • Desktop 1.3.0.1:
    • The Golden Fishing Rod now only requires 30 completed quests instead of 50.
    • Increased the chance of obtaining the Fiberglass Fishing Pole from 1.96% to 3.27%.
  • Desktop 1.2.4.1:
    • Fixed a bug where trying to use a fishing pole while pulling a snapped line would make the bobber appear again.
    • Fishing poles can now be placed in the Weapon Rack.
    • Fixed a bug where fishing bobbers would not disappear upon death.
  • Console 1.0.933.1: The Golden Fishing Rod now only requires 30 completed quests instead of 50. (Xbox One)
  • Console 1.0.750.0: The Golden Fishing Rod now only requires 30 completed quests instead of 50. (PlayStation 4)
  • Mobile 1.3.0.7:
    • The Golden Fishing Rod now only requires 30 completed quests instead of 50.
    • The Fiberglass Fishing Pole can no longer be found inside Jungle Sanctums, as the structure has been removed.
