Several tree types in their respective biomes. From left to right: Purity/Forest, Corruption, Crimson, Hallow, Snow, Beach, Jungle/Underground Jungle, Mushroom.

Trees are the largest plants in Terraria, appearing mostly at the surface and often in clusters with similar height. Most trees can be chopped down with an axe or chainsaw, or destroyed with the use of explosives or by pouring lava on their bases. Destroying or chopping down a tree will yield many units of its respective Wood, an essential crafting material, and has a chance of dropping one or more Acorns that can be planted to grow more trees. Larger trees will yield more of these two items when removed; one unit of Wood will drop for each block of tree (including branches), and one Acorn may drop for each leaf patch.

It is possible to cut off parts of the tree, but cutting at the lowermost center tile will destroy the entire tree. If parts of the tree are left, they will not regrow. Tiles beneath trees cannot be destroyed or actuated.

Tree saplings can be painted, although this will not affect the tree at all. However, painting the blocks underneath the sapling will result in the tree being painted when it matures.

Three other large plants do not drop Wood and spawn differently, but are otherwise treated similarly to trees. These are Giant Glowing Mushrooms, Cacti and Bamboo stalks(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions).

Variants

Forest tree

Tree (Forest).png
A Forest tree planted on regular grass.

Forest trees are the most common type of tree, and can be found growing on regular grass. They can be planted on regular grass in any biome. They drop Acorns and regular Wood when harvested. Forest trees can turn into Ebonwood, Shadewood, or Pearlwood trees if the block they grow on is converted to the respective biome.

Vanity trees

Desktop versionConsole versionMobile version

Tree (Willow).png Tree (Sakura).png
Yellow Willow and Sakura trees planted on regular grass.

Yellow Willow trees and Sakura trees are vanity trees which serve mainly as decoration. They can be found naturally in the Forest and drop regular Wood when harvested. Their respective saplings can be bought from the Zoologist and can be planted on any type of grass. For instance, their drops depend of the grass that they are planted on, which affects loot from tree shaking as well. If a vanity tree is planted on Corrupt or Crimson grass, one of the following things can occur:

  • A sapling will disappear/fall down after certain time and yield nothing. However, there is a chance that the sapling grows before disappearing.
  • A fully grown vanity tree will disappear/fall down as well, but will drop Ebonwood or Shadewood, respectively, rather than nothing. It also will not drop Acorns or tree shaking loot, unless if the player harvests it before it disappears. If the grass beneath an existing vanity tree gets Corrupted or Crimson, this can also happen.

Both types of vanity trees have a 1/20 (5%) chance to replace a Forest tree during world generation.

Boreal tree

Boreal trees are found in the Snow biome. They can be planted on Snow Blocks in any biome. They drop Acorns and Boreal Wood when harvested.

On the Nintendo 3DSNintendo 3DS version version, the Snow biome contains Snowy trees which drop Acorns and normal Wood. Acorns planted on Snow Blocks in any biome will produce Snowy trees.

Palm tree

Desktop/Console/Old-gen console/Mobile-Only Content: This section's information applies only to the Desktop, Console, Old-gen console, and Mobile versions of Terraria.
Tree (Ocean).png Oasis Tree.png
Ocean and Oasis Palm trees planted on Sand.

Palm trees are found in the Ocean and Oasis(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions). They can be planted on regular Sand Blocks in any biome. They drop Palm Wood and (Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) usually only a single Acorn when harvested. Unlike other trees, Palm trees require only one block of sand but 30 tiles of headroom, and only one space is needed between the sapling and another object for the tree to grow. Palm trees grow in a curved shape.

The Ebonwood, Shadewood, and Pearlwood Palm tree variants drop their respective type of wood, rather than Palm Wood.

Cactus

Cactus Types.png
Cacti growing on Sand, Ebonsand, Pearlsand, and Crimsand.
Main article: Cactus#Plant

Cacti grow in the Desert biome on all types of sand and when harvested drop Cactus. They cannot be planted manually; placing an Acorn on sand yields a Palm tree. On the Desktop version Desktop version, Console version Console version, and Mobile version Mobile version, the Sand Block the Cactus plant grows on is unbreakable and not affected by gravity. On the Old-gen console version Old-gen console version and Nintendo 3DSNintendo 3DS version version, mining or hammering the Sand Block the Cactus plant grows on will harvest the cactus. Corrupt, Crimson, and Hallow Cacti will all drop the same Cactus items when harvested.

Cacti will sometimes grow Pink Prickly Pears on their tops.

Mahogany tree

Tree (Jungle).png Underground Jungle Tree.png
Surface and Underground Mahogany trees planted on Jungle grass.

Mahogany trees can be found in the Jungle and Underground Jungle. They can be planted on Jungle grass in any biome. They drop Rich Mahogany but normally no Acorns when harvested. Branches that hang over non-Jungle grass blocks (e.g. regular grass) have a low chance to drop an Acorn. They tend to grow higher than normal trees: up to 21 tiles. The Mahogany trees generated in the Underground Jungle have fewer leaves and are more knotted than the surface variant.

Like Cacti, Bamboo, and Giant Glowing Mushrooms, Mahogany trees can spawn on the surface on their own (but never underground). They need the usual horizontal space and a 24-tile headroom to grow. Larger Jungle vegetation tends to grow on open space quickly, which often leaves not enough space for Mahogany trees to spawn. On the Old-gen console version Old-gen console version and Nintendo 3DSNintendo 3DS version version, Mahogany trees can spawn underwater.

On the Old-gen console version Old-gen console version and Nintendo 3DSNintendo 3DS version version in Hardmode, Corruption and Crimson spread through mud, replacing it with dirt, and Mahogany trees turn into the respective infected trees. Because the ground is converted to dirt, cleaning either infection will turn an infected tree into a Forest tree, so Mahogany trees cannot be restored once they are infected.

Bamboo

Tree (Bamboo).png

Main article: Bamboo

Bamboo stalks are found in the Jungle, growing naturally from Jungle grass covered in water or Shimmer. They drop Bamboo and require a pickaxe or drill to be harvested, unlike other tree-like plants.

Ebonwood and Ebonwood Palm trees

Tree (Corruption).png Tree (Corruption Palm).png
An Ebonwood tree planted on Corrupt grass and an Ebonwood Palm tree planted on Ebonsand.

Ebonwood trees are purple trees found in the Corruption. They can be planted on Corrupt grass in any biome. They drop Acorns and Ebonwood when harvested.

Ebonwood Palm trees are purple, palm-shaped trees found in Corrupt Oceans and Oases(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions). They can be planted on Ebonsand Blocks in any biome. They drop Ebonwood when harvested, rather than Palm Wood.

Converting the ground beneath a Forest/vanity or Palm tree from grass/sand to Corrupt grass/Ebonsand will convert the tree to an Ebonwood or Ebonwood Palm tree, respectively, and vice versa. The shape of the tree will not change during conversion.

Shadewood and Shadewood Palm trees

Tree (Crimson).png Tree (Crimson Palm).png

Shadewood trees are red trees found in the Crimson. They can be planted on Crimson grass in any biome. They drop Acorns and Shadewood when harvested.

Shadewood Palm trees are red, palm-shaped trees found in Crimson Oceans and Oases(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions). They can be planted on Crimsand Blocks in any biome. They drop Shadewood when harvested, rather than Palm Wood.

Converting the ground beneath a Forest/vanity or Palm tree from grass/sand to Crimson grass/Crimsand will convert the tree to a Shadewood or Shadewood Palm tree, respectively, and vice versa. The shape of the tree will not change during conversion.

Ash tree

Tree (Ash).png
An Ash tree planted on Ash grass.

Ash trees are leafless trees found in the outer edges of the Underworld. They have a twisted, burnt appearance and glow in the dark. They can be planted on Ash grass in any biome at any depth. They drop Acorns and Ash Wood when harvested.

Pearlwood and Pearlwood Palm trees

Tree (Hallow).png Tree (Hallow Palm).png
A Pearlwood tree planted on Hallowed grass and a Pearlwood Palm tree planted on Pearlsand.

Pearlwood trees are found in the Hallow, have a taller and triangle-shaped foliage, and exist in many different colors: They may randomly be blue, red, light green, cyan, pink, magenta, yellow, or purple. They can be planted on Hallowed grass in any biome. They drop Acorns and Pearlwood when harvested.

Pearlwood Palm trees are palm-shaped trees found in Hallowed Oceans and Oases(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions). They can be planted on Pearlsand Blocks in any biome. They drop Pearlwood when harvested, rather than Palm Wood.

Converting the ground beneath a Forest/vanity or Palm tree from grass/sand to Hallowed grass/Pearlsand will convert the tree to a Pearlwood or Pearlwood Palm tree, respectively, and vice versa. The shape of the tree will not change during conversion.

Unlike all other trees, Pearlwood and Pearlwood Palm trees are exclusive to Hardmode.

Giant Glowing Mushroom

Giant Glowing Mushroom (surface).png
A Giant Glowing Mushroom planted on Mushroom grass on the surface.

Giant Glowing Mushrooms can be found in Glowing Mushroom biomes. They drop Glowing Mushrooms and rarely Acorns or Mushroom Grass Seeds when harvested. They are handled by the game as trees, but cannot be planted with Acorns; instead, they self-spawn from Mushroom grass, given space. Giant Glowing Mushrooms on the surface (above 0 depth) have a wider, often-branched form, whereas they have different, branchless appearance underground.

Gem trees

Gem tree variants. From left to right: Amethyst, Topaz, Sapphire, Emerald, Ruby, Diamond, Amber.
Main article: Gemcorns

Gem trees are stony trees found in the Cavern layer and the Aether biome. There are seven types corresponding to the seven types of gems. They can be planted on Stone Block with Gemcorns. They drop their respective gem and Gemcorn type when harvested, as well as Stone Blocks. Despite being visually made of stone, they still require an axe or chainsaw to be harvested.

Gem trees can be planted on converted Stone Blocks (e.g. Ebonstone or Crimstone), but they will grow into normal Gem trees which drop normal Stone Block regardless of their basis.

While Gem trees will never generate trunks wider than a tile at their base, they still require the two adjacent blocks to be stone in order to grow. Once the tree is grown, the blocks can safely be replaced.

Trees as obstacles

Trees are background objects that do not affect player or enemy movement. They cannot be climbed or scaled with items such as grappling hooks (except for the Squirrel Hook(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)) or Climbing Claws, and blocks cannot be placed to overlap their limbs. However, it is possible to attach platforms and torches to the trunk of a tree (except palm trees) and place blocks and platforms in front of the leaves at the top of the tree (or the caps of Giant Glowing Mushrooms). Furniture items placed on said blocks or platforms are obstructed by the leaves but still retain their full functionality (e. g. lightsources will still emit light as usual).

Growing conditions

Newly planted Saplings, left to right: Forest, Ebonwood, Shadewood, Pearlwood, Boreal, Mahogany, Palm
The smallest enclosures allowed for growing trees: without saplings (top), planted saplings (middle), grown trees (bottom).

Acorns and Saplings

Planting an Acorn on certain blocks will create a Sapling that can eventually grow into a tree. An Acorn can only be planted on pure, Corrupt, Crimson, Hallowed, Jungle or Ash grass(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions), Snow, Sand, Ebonsand, Crimsand, or Pearlsand (not Mushroom grass, see below). The tree will be of a type according to the block it was planted on, with random size and shape appropriate to its type. Saplings can be destroyed with a pickaxe or drill, but will not drop the Acorn item they were planted from. Saplings can only grow under the following conditions:

  1. The Acorn requires one horizontal space of appropriate open ground on either side of its base, as well as appropriate ground type where it may put a stump. The appropriate ground type means a grass, a snow, or a sand block. The block need not be the same grass/snow/sand block type as the Sapling's.
    • Palm tree does not require this, as it does not put out a stump.
  2. The Sapling also requires at least two unobstructed (empty) tiles to the left and right to put branches, forming a 5-tile wide column.
    • Palm tree does not require this, as it does not put out branches.
  3. Excluding Palm tree saplings, a good rule to follow is that there must be at least three open tiles between two Saplings or only one will grow into a tree. This matches the previous rules, i.e. each Acorn needs both adjacent tiles free as well as the tile next to them, which means either the stump or branches would most often occupy the second ones' growing space when the first tree grows, hence counting to three tiles between them. However, if no branches or stump grows on the side of the other sapling (or they are trimmed from tree), previous rules applying, the sapling will grow also two tiles away (Palm tree one tile). However, Palm tree saplings are the sole exception in that they can still grow with only 1 open tile between them. This is because, as mentioned earlier, Palm trees put out neither a stump nor branches.
  4. Small grass and tiny flower plants will not block a Sapling's growth, but almost anything that takes a pickaxe or drill to remove will do so: Torches, platforms, Sunflowers, etc. cannot be within a 2-tile radius. Dye plants, Mushrooms, Jungle plants or trees, Cacti, etc. can also self-spawn next to a Sapling and prevent its growth, but once the blocking item is harvested, the Sapling can grow normally.
  5. Saplings require a certain amount of vertical clearance; if not provided, they may take very long to grow into a tree or do not grow at all. Even when there is sufficient space, a tree's leaves may sometimes be big enough to clip through the roof.
    • (Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) Most Saplings require 9–20 tiles (including the tile the Sapling occupies), Mahogany trees require 14–25 tiles.
    • (Old-gen console and 3DS versions) Most Saplings require at least 16 tiles, Mahogany trees require 24 tiles, and Palm trees require 30 tiles.
  6. Most Saplings will grow indoors as long as there is either a fence or no wall immediately behind the Sapling. Palm tree Saplings will not grow in front of fences.
  7. Most Saplings needs to be above surface level. Acorns must be planted at "surface level" or higher, even if all other conditions are met. Acorns planted on Ash grass and Gemcorns can grow anywhere long as their other conditions are met.
  8. On the Old-gen console version Old-gen console version and Nintendo 3DSNintendo 3DS version version, Saplings must be off-screen in order to become trees. They will not grow when currently in view, unlike most other plants which can grow while being watched.
    • On the Desktop version Desktop version, Console version Console version, and Mobile version Mobile version, trees can grow on-screen, appearing with a small shower of leaves. They also update the map data automatically, so it is possible to spot tree growth on the minimap or full screen map without needing to approach the sapling on these versions.

Note that world generation can place trees in places where these conditions are not met, e.g. atop a single block of soil.

Self-spawning

Giant Glowing Mushrooms have similar space requirements to trees, but they cannot be planted; instead, they will "self-spawn", randomly appearing full-grown on Mushroom grass. Mahogany trees can also similarly self-spawn on Jungle grass (if there is space), but can also be planted with Acorns. Cacti and Bamboo stalks need much less space, but can likewise self-spawn on any sand variant or Jungle grass covered in water respectively. "Infected" sand will spawn Cacti which appear different according to sand type, but are otherwise identical.

Shaking

Desktop versionConsole versionMobile version
Desktop/Console/Mobile-Only Content: This section's information applies only to the Desktop, Console, and Mobile versions of Terraria.

Shaking occurs when a player hits the trunk or branches of a tree with an axe or chainsaw, but does not fully cut it down. When hitting trees, the tree will always show a visual puff of leaves, even if nothing is dropped, to indicate that a successful tree hit has been performed. In order for a tree to be shaken, it must both have a "leafy" top as well as not have any blocks in a two-tile radius from the top. In addition to this, players can shake a maximum of 500 trees a day. Once this limit is exceeded, shaking will not occur until the following dawn. Each tree can only be shaken once per day; subsequent hits will not generate additional shakes. Cacti, Bamboo stalks, and Gem trees cannot be shaken.

This content is transcluded from Trees/Shaking.Shaking a tree has a chance to drop an item or object, or spawn an enemy or critter. The rates may differ per tree type and under certain circumstances, which is visualized in the table below. The icons in front of some of the chances denote the following conditions:

Chances without an icon apply if none of the respective conditions are met, where applicable.

Notes

  • Gem trees do not require any level of light in order to grow.
  • Tree tiles cannot be actuated with an Actuator.
  • Lava will instantly destroy trees, except for Gem and Ash trees.
  • If planted on painted tiles, the tree's tiles will also be painted.
  • Even if Gem trees are planted on Ebonstone, Crimstone or Pearlstone, or if the Stone Blocks that they are planted are converted to Ebonstone, Crimstone or Pearlstone, they will retain their standard appearance and will not gain a Corrupt, Crimson or Hallowed shape.
    • The same goes for vanity trees, as they keep their appearance even if the grass below it gets Corrupted/Crimson/Hallowed. However, vanity trees are destroyed after some time in the case of Corrupted or Crimson grass.
