The Gold Worm is a critter. It is a golden recolor of the ordinary Worm, with a 1/400 (0.25%) chance of spawning in place of the ordinary version.
The Gold Worm has only 5 health and no defense, and can be damaged by other enemies and players.
The Gold Worm can be caught with any Bug Net to be carried around in the inventory and released later, or crafted into animated decorative furniture (Gold Worm Cage). Once crafted, the Gold Worm cannot be released again, unless the furniture item is de-crafted via Shimmer(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions). The Gold Worm itself or the crafted furniture can be sold for 10 GC.
The Gold Worm can be used as bait for fishing, with 50% bait power.
Uniquely, the Gold Worm has an exceptionally low chance of being consumed as bait of 1/20 (5%).[1]
It can also be rarely obtained from opening a Can Of Worms.
It is one of the few entities that can be detected by the Lifeform Analyzer or its upgrades.

Notes
- The Tackle Box and its upgrades have no effect on the Gold Worm's chance of being consumed when fishing.[1]
Tips
- The Gold Worm is best used to obtain a Gummy Worm as it is a permanent buff to the player's fishing power.
- The Gold Worm is a good bait item due to its particularly low chance of being consumed. Other gold critters and other items with 50% bait power have a 1/9.333 (10.71%) (or 1/10.333 (9.68%) with the Tackle Box or its upgrades) chance of being consumed, so the Gold Worm will last more than twice as long as them on average.
Trivia
- The Bestiary entry for the Gold Worm: "Rarely, critters are found coated entirely in gold! They are worth great coin to shopkeepers and fish absolutely love golden bait!"
History
- Desktop 1.4.4:
- When used for fishing, has a particularly low chance of being consumed (only 1/20 chance). Is no longer affected by the Tackle Box and its upgrades.
- Now used to craft the Gummy Worm via shimmer.
