Not to be confused with Moon Stone.

The Moon Charm is a Hardmode accessory that, when equipped during nighttime, transforms the player into a werewolf and applies the Werewolf buff, which provides several stat bonuses but does not grant the player protection to damage from Werewolf enemies. Additionally, the Moon Charm replaces the sound the player makes when damaged with the hurt sound that regular Werewolf enemies also have. Although the regular Werewolf enemy is colored blue, the player Werewolf will be colored brown. The Moon Charm has a 1/60 (1.67%) chance of being dropped by Werewolves.

The Werewolf buff provides the player with these bonuses:[1]

Notes

  • The Merfolk buff (granted by Neptune's Shell) overrides the Werewolf buff, replacing the graphics and canceling the bonuses granted by the Moon Charm during nighttime.
  • Armor will be hidden while the Werewolf buff is active, but will still grant its effects. Accessories will remain visible.
  • Dyes in the respective armor slots will also affect the werewolf's fur color. (For example, if there is red dye affecting the chest piece, the werewolf's chest fur will be dyed red.)
  • Equipping the Moon Charm in a vanity slot will give the player the appearance and sounds of a werewolf at any time, including during the day, but they will not receive the buff.
  • Setting the Moon Charm to invisible will prevent the appearance or sounds of a Werewolf for the player, but the stat changes still take effect.

Tips

  • The Moon Charm is a reasonably good accessory for melee fighters. Non-melee characters should not bother with it, though mages and rangers interested in the effects of the Neptune's Shell might consider using a Celestial Shell (which combines the effects of the Moon Charm with the Merfolk transformation, and grants the Celestial Stone benefits) or a Moon Shell instead (which combines the effects of the Moon Charm with the Merfolk transformation, without the Celestial Stone benefits) if they want the aesthetics that come from the charm while gaining some level of usefulness from it.
  • The Moon Charm is very useful when fighting bosses as most boss fights can only take place at night. This means that the player gains all the benefits of the accessory throughout the entire fight.
  • If a Blood Moon and Full Moon occur at the same time, farming for the charm becomes much easier due to the massively increased spawnrates of enemies.
    • One can force this to occur using Bloody Tear on a Full Moon.

History

  • Desktop 1.4.0.1: Effect no longer stacks with Celestial Shell and its derivative accessories.
  • Desktop 1.3.0.6: Can now hide the Moon Charm's werewolf transformation, or equip the charm to a Vanity slot for purely aesthetic transformations.
  • Desktop 1.2.3: Fixed issue where merman / werewolf transforms are visible when you're invisible.
  • Desktop 1.2:
    • Overall boost to effects, also triggers every night instead of just full moons.
    • Now used to craft the Moon Shell.
