This article is about the colored counterweights. For the upgraded version, see Strung Counterweight.

Counterweights are accessories sold by the Traveling Merchant and the Skeleton Merchant. They fire a second yoyo-type projectile after hitting an enemy with a yoyo, which travels towards it, then arcs over the player. Counterweights deal the yoyo's full damage. There are six different color variants with identical functionalities.

Notes

  • Counterweights do not stack with each other or with their upgrades.
  • The particular color equipped will display on a character, unlike the Yoyo Bag, which shows a random color.
  • Counterweights have a maximum range of 7.8 tiles.[1]
    • Having a string or its upgrades equipped increases this range to 10.4 tiles.
  • The knockback of counterweights is calculated using the following formula: (yoyo's knockback + 6) / 2[2]

Trivia

  • Counterweights are real-life yo-yo accessories used to aid in tricks where the yo-yo is swung from the middle of the string rather than its end. Real-world counterweights are often patterned after (or made out of) polyhedral dice, and Terraria's follow suit: the Blue and Red Counterweights are four-sided (tetrahedral) dice, the Purple and Green Counterweights are six-sided (cubic/hexahedral) dice, and the Black and Yellow Counterweights are twelve-sided (dodecahedral) dice.

History

  • Desktop 1.4.5.0:
    • Now used to craft the Strung Counterweight instead of the Yoyo Bag.
    • Damage increased from 80% of yoyo damage to 100%.
    • Velocity increased by 100%.
    • Counterweights will now override the visuals of the Yoyo Bag if placed in a vanity slot.
