The Volatile Gelatin attacking Target Dummies and a Unicorn.

The Volatile Gelatin is a Hardmode accessory that periodically fires small, purple slimeballs similar to those of the Queen Slime's Regal Gel projectiles at nearby enemies. The Volatile Gelatin's projectiles can pierce up to three enemies or ricochet up to three times, and deal 65 classless damage while inflicting a knockback value of 7 (Strong); these values are unaffected by any boosts.[1] The Volatile Gelatin is always dropped from Queen Slime's Treasure Bag in Expert Mode.

The accessory has a fixed cycle: Once every 0.833 seconds (50 ticks[2]), it attempts to release a projectile in the direction of the nearest enemy. If there is no enemy within 40 tiles, no projectile will be fired and the accessory will go on cooldown for the following 50 ticks.

Tips

  • Like minions, sentries, and the Spore Sac, this accessory is useful during fishing, mining, and other activities where the player is not focused on defending themselves. The Volatile Gelatin's knockback and piercing abilities can also help the player from being overwhelmed during fights, though to a lesser degree than the Spore Sac.
  • The scenarios in which the Volatin Gelatin may find use are few and far between, as the rate at which it fires projectiles, combined with the high knockback resistance of most Expert Hardmode enemies can render this accessory obsolete compared to more powerful combat-focused or class-specific accessories. Still, if one is looking to find a use for this accessory, it is somewhat helpful when used alongside early-Hardmode weapons. However, by the time this accessory is obtained, the player may already have powerful equipment and weapons at their disposal for contending with Hardmode enemies and bosses.

History

  • Desktop 1.4.4:
    • Projectiles now fire farther and with a flatter arc
    • Fire rate increased from every 50 frames to every 40 frames (1.2 per second -> 1.5 per second)

  2. A tick is a time unit countable by the software. Most of Terraria's updating logic happens every tick. A tick has the length of 1/60th of a second, hence there are 60 ticks in a second and 3600 ticks in a minute.
