The Sextant is an informational accessory that displays the current moon phase. The Sextant can be received as a 1/34 (2.94%) chance reward for completing a fishing quest for the Angler NPC, depending on the number of completed quests and other factors (for details, see Angler).

The Angler will not give the player a Sextant as a reward if they already have one in their inventory or in any of their portable storage items or loadouts. However, if the player has all of the Angler's fishing and informational accessories (or their upgrades like the Angler Tackle Bag and Fish Finder) in their inventories, this rule will be ignored.

The Sextant is one of the three parts necessary to make the Fish Finder, with the others being the Weather Radio and the Fisherman's Pocket Guide, and as such is a required ingredient in crafting the Shellphone.

• Unlike most accessories, informational accessories such as the Sextant do not need to be equipped in an accessory slot. The Sextant may be carried in the player's inventory without loss of functionality, unless equipped to a social slot. Additionally, the info it provides will be shared with players of the same team in multiplayer that are within 50 tiles. Keep in mind modifiers will no longer apply to the player when not equipped.
• The Fisherman's Pocket Guide, Weather Radio, and Sextant are interchangeable with Shimmer.
• The icon of the Sextant turns into a red moon during a Blood Moon or a Solar Eclipse.

Trivia

• A real-life sextant is a navigational instrument used to determine the angle between an astrological object and the horizon, often by sailors to determine latitude, and has nothing to do with measuring or evaluating moon phases.
