This article is about the Giant Tortoise drop. For the Ice Tortoise drop, see Frozen Turtle Shell.

The Turtle Shell is a Hardmode crafting material that has a (Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) 1/12 (8.33%) / (Old-gen console and 3DS versions) 1/17 (5.88%) chance of being dropped by the Giant Tortoises in the Hardmode Jungle and Underground Jungle.

Turtle Shells are used solely to craft Turtle armor, which can in turn be used to craft Beetle armor. Crafting all pieces of Turtle armor or Beetle armor requires a total of 3 Turtle Shells. Crafting a set of Beetle armor with both chest variants requires 4 Turtle Shells.

  • On average and with 0 luck(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions), one needs to kill about (Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) 65 / (Old-gen console and 3DS versions) 90 Giant Tortoises for a 90% chance to get 3 Turtle Shells (about (Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) 100 / (Old-gen console and 3DS versions) 140 for 99%). For 4 Turtle Shells, this number is raised to (Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) 80 / (Old-gen console and 3DS versions) 110 for a 90% chance (and (Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) 120 / (Old-gen console and 3DS versions) 170 for 99%).

  • Despite being called a Turtle Shell, it is dropped by the Giant Tortoise. The only turtles in the game are critters (Sea Turtle, Turtle, Jungle Turtle) and summons (Pet Turtle, Turtle Mount).
  • Even though it has a higher drop rate than the Bezoar, it is rarer overall due to the Giant Tortoise's relatively low spawn rate.
