The Broken Hero Sword is a Hardmode crafting material. On the  Desktop version,  Console version, and  Mobile version, it has a 1/4 (25%) / 7/16 (43.75%) chance of being dropped by Mothrons. On the  Old-gen console version and Nintendo 3DS version, it instead has a 1/250 (0.4%) chance of being dropped by Frankensteins and Swamp Things.

It is not a weapon itself, and therefore can neither be swung, reforged, or placed on a Weapon Rack.

Notes

• On the  Old-gen console version and Nintendo 3DS version, the Broken Hero Sword can be obtained after defeating one mechanical boss. On the  Desktop version,  Console version, and  Mobile version, it can only be obtained after Plantera is defeated due to the Mothron only being able to spawn post-Plantera.

Tips

• Given the drop rate, it is not guaranteed to obtain one during a Solar Eclipse. Therefore, it can be a good idea to use Water Candles and/or Battle Potions during a Solar Eclipse to increase the number of opportunities of having one or even multiple Broken Hero Swords dropped.

Trivia

• This item is an allusion to the classic literary trope of the disgraced or defeated hero who must repair their sword, or the similar trope of taking up the weapon of a past hero (perhaps killed by the monster dropping this item) to fulfill a destiny.

• Desktop 1.4.1:
  • Can now only be obtained after Plantera has been defeated, since Mothron no longer spawns prior to that.
  • No longer used to craft the True Night's Edge and True Excalibur.
  • Now used again to craft the Terra Blade.

  • Now combined with a Toilet to craft the Terra Toilet.
