Do you know why we all carry around these spiked balls? Because I don't.

Emote Town Goblin Tinkerer.gif The Goblin Tinkerer

Not to be confused with the invincible Spike Ball enemy found in the Dungeon.
Animation of the Spiky Ball.

The Spiky Ball is a consumable ranged weapon that is primarily used as a passive trap by tossing them to the ground, where enemies who pass over them will take damage up to (Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) 7 / (Old-gen console and 3DS versions) 6 times (after which the Spiky Balls vanish). If not destroyed, they will automatically vanish after one minute. They can also be directly thrown at enemies, but they have a very short arc and quickly fall to the ground. Spiky Balls have a 199/400 (49.75%) chance of being dropped by all goblins during the Goblin Army event (except for the Goblin Warlock(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)), and can be purchased from the Goblin Tinkerer for 80 CC each.

(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) The Goblin Tinkerer uses Spiky Balls to defend himself against nearby enemies.

Notes

  • Spiky Balls will not harm the player who threw them, nor will they damage NPCs. They will, however, damage other players in PvP.
  • Once thrown, a Spiky Ball cannot be picked up again.
  • Spiky Balls will not fall through platforms.

Tips

  • Spiky Balls are useful against groups of enemies or bosses (e.g., the Eater of Worlds, Brain of Cthulhu, or King Slime), especially because they can be set up in advance.
    • Ironically, they are very good for fighting the Goblin Army, the event Spiky Balls are obtained from in the first place.
    • It is recommended that the player throw some Spiky Balls onto solid blocks or platforms as soon as they are picked up to deal extra damage to the swarms of grounded enemies that the Goblin Army generates.
  • When wearing Frost armor, Spiky Balls will glow from the Frostburn effect and can serve as makeshift Glowsticks.
  • When thrown on the ground, they can serve as an immobilizer to any enemy that does not have knockback resistance.
  • As Spiky Balls are a very common drop during the Goblin Army event, with each Spiky Ball selling for 16 CC, they are a decent money source early on.
