This is an archive of "Guide:Challenge Classes".
For more experienced players these classes can add a new challenge. The idea is that a smaller selection of Weapons and Armor is available in order to promote the use of less used Items. This in turn, often results in unique gameplay otherwise not experienced. These classes aim to have a high similarity of types of used weapon types to improve roleplay, while not having too severe power loss during any part of the progression. Some classes might, however, really struggle to progress through certain parts of Expert Mode or higher difficulty. In a lot of cases there is no easy access to an early game weapon. This is intended. Use your wits to outsmart those monsters: Sand, lava and boulders hurt! And besides this, enemies do not like to be caged in. Okay, enough talk, the rest is up to you!:
Note: This guide is still a work in progress. Some classes still have to be added. The classes that are shown below, however, are working as intended. Some extra notes and flavour text will be added in the future. Also, there are some similarities with the following guide: Guide:Weapon Playthroughs.

The Corruption does, however, provide the Worm Scarf, which is also very good.

Notes: This class excells at keeping enemies at bay, making for a great tanking class. Its damage is okay, but falls of in the late game.
Boomerangs

Notes: This class really has a difficult learning curve. Flails are difficult to use and have a long downtime once thrown, making the user vulnerable to counterattack.
Ranged Classes
Robin Hood
Difficulty: Easy
Robin Hood speaks for itself. It may use the following items:
- Fossil armor(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
- Necro armor
- Adamantite armor
- Titanium armor
- Hallowed armor
- Shroomite armor
- Vortex armor(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)

- Pulse Bow(Desktop, Console, Old-gen console and Mobile versions)
- Aerial Bane(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
- Tsunami
- Eventide(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
- Phantasm(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
Notes: It is a very balanced class and strong throughout all parts of the game. Because this class has access to Jester's Arrows, it can help a weaker class get through the early stages of the game.
Cowboy
Difficulty: Hard
The Cowboy is the fastest gun in the wild west, or at least the one with the worst carpal tunnel. He uses all guns that lack autofire or shoot slow, because he needs his time to aim. These are the items he can use:
- Goggles
- Fossil armor(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
- Necro armor
- Adamantite armor
- Titanium armor
- Frost armor
- Hallowed armor
- Shroomite armor
- Vortex armor(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
- Red Ryder(Desktop, Console, Old-gen console and Mobile versions)
- Flintlock Pistol
- Musket
- The Undertaker
- Revolver(Desktop, Console, Old-gen console and Mobile versions)
- Handgun
- Phoenix Blaster
Notes: The typical first item is The Undertaker or the Musket. Getting these can be quite challenging. The biggest power drop for the cowboy is early Hardmode. Here he is stuck with the Phoenix Blaster until he kills plantera with it. To accomodate for this power drop, the cowboy has access to the frost armor, allowing a bit more tankyness during this stage. When playing this class, you better make every last shot count!
The Gunner
Difficulty: Normal
The Gunner tries to fire as many bullets as he can. He loves showering his enemies in cold hard lead. The items that the gunner uses are:
- Fossil armor(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
- Necro armor
- Adamantite armor
- Titanium armor
- Hallowed armor
- Shroomite armor
- Vortex armor(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
- Clockwork Assault Rifle
- Gatligator(Desktop, Console, Old-gen console and Mobile versions)
- Uzi
- Megashark
- Chain Gun
- Vortex Beater(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
- S.D.M.G.(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
Notes: Just like for the Cowboy, the first gun is available after destroying the first Shadow Orb and letting the Arms Dealer spawn. Make sure to collect a whopping 35 gold in order to buy it. Because of its low base damage it is useful to get a Shark Tooth Necklace and a Stinger Necklace in order to do more damage to bosses with alot of defense.
Shotgun
Difficulty: Hard
The Shotgun has given up all requirements to aim. He just wants to shoot and be done with it. He uses the following items:
- Night Vision Helmet(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
- Fossil armor(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
- Necro armor
- Adamantite armor
- Titanium armor
- Frost armor
- Hallowed armor
- Shroomite armor
- Vortex armor(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
- Quad-Barrel Shotgun(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
- Boomstick
- Shotgun
- Onyx Blaster(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
- Tactical Shotgun
- Xenopopper(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
Notes: Getting a Boomstick from a Jungle Shrine can be hard without a weapon. Since 1.4.0.1 the new Quad-Barrel Shotgun helps bypass this, but you still need to smash a Shadow Orb in order to get the Arms Dealer. Both weapons will get you through Pre-Hardmode quite well. Don't forget that Meteor Shot doesn't work well with shotguns. The power curve of this class is quite smooth after you get your first weapon.
This is a gun?
Difficulty: Normal
This class uses all "Guns" that, well, aren't as much of gun. It can use the following items:
- Fossil armor(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
- Necro armor
- Adamantite armor
- Titanium armor
- Frost armor
- Hallowed armor
- Shroomite armor
- Vortex armor(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
- Flare Gun
- Snowball Cannon
- Blowpipe
- Harpoon
- Paintball Gun(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
- Blowgun
- Sandgun
- Star Cannon
- Dart Pistol(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
- Dart Rifle(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
- Toxikarp(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
- Flamethrower
- Coin Gun
- Super Star Shooter(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
- Stake Launcher
- Elf Melter
- Piranha Gun
- Candy Corn Rifle
Notes: This class has access to some very early Weapons, making it a good partner for a class that doesn't.
Magic Classes
Harry Potter
Difficulty: Easy
Harry Potter uses, yes you guessed it: Wands. He can use all of the following items:
- Any gemmed Robe
- Gypsy Robe(Old-gen console version)
- Magic Hat(Desktop, Console, Old-gen console and Mobile versions)
- Wizard Hat
- Jungle armor
- Ancient Cobalt armor
- Adamantite armor
- Titanium armor
- Hallowed armor
- Spectre armor
- Nebula armor(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
- Wand of Sparking(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
- Thunder Zapper(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
- Amber Staff(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
- Magic Missile
- Flamelash
- Flower of Fire
- Ice Rod
- Flower of Frost
- Crystal Vile Shard(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
- Life Drain(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
- Clinger Staff(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
- Meteor Staff(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
- Nimbus Rod
- Poison Staff
- Frost Staff
- Tome of Infinite Wisdom(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
- Rainbow Rod
- Unholy Trident
- Venom Staff(Desktop, Console, Old-gen console and Mobile versions)
- Nettle Burst
- Shadowbeam Staff
- Inferno Fork
- Spectre Staff
- Staff of Earth
- Bat Scepter
- Blizzard Staff
- Betsy's Wrath(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
Notes: With the high amount of weapons to choose from this class has an answer for almost all problems. Because of its smooth power curve it can help bridge the power gap of some other classes. In the very late stages of the game its power drops a little.
Magic Guns
Difficulty: Normal
This class can use the following items:
- Night Vision Helmet(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
- Meteor armor
- Adamantite armor
- Titanium armor
- Hallowed armor
- Spectre armor
- Nebula armor(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
- Space Gun
- Bee Gun
- Gray Zapinator(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
- Laser Rifle
- Zapinator(3DS version)
- Wasp Gun
- Leaf Blower
- Razorpine
- Rainbow Gun
- Heat Ray
- Laser Machinegun(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
- Bubble Gun
- Orange Zapinator(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
Notes: This class has the latest first weapon of all the listed classes. Requiring you to smash Shadow Orb(s) in order to get a Meteorite (biome) to fall from the sky. Then, all without a weapon still, you have to mine that Meteorite so you can craft that Space Gun and Meteor armor. After this struggle the rest of the run is very solid.
The Author
Difficulty: Normal
The Author is the original publisher of all magic works. He knows the content of all the magical lorebooks and makes most of the ancient spells contained within. He can use the following items:
- Any gemmed Robe
- Gypsy Robe(Old-gen console version)
- Magic Hat(Desktop, Console, Old-gen console and Mobile versions)
- Wizard Hat
- Jungle armor
- Ancient Cobalt armor
- Adamantite armor
- Titanium armor
- Hallowed armor
- Spectre armor
- Nebula armor(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
- Cursed Flames
- Golden Shower
- Crystal Storm
- Magnet Sphere
- Razorblade Typhoon
- Lunar Flare(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
Notes: This class was significantly nerfed in patch 1.4.0.1, where they removed the option to get a pre-Skeletron Water Bolt. Now the first weapon is the Demon Scythe. You get this by killing Demons in The Underworld. This is extremely hard to do because Imps will shoot at you through walls and Bone Serpents spawn there as well. Next to this, the drop chance is also very low. Since they are immune to lava you will also have to kill them using Sand Blocks, Silt Blocks, Slush Blocks or Boulders. After getting a weapon this class is pretty strong and performs well during the rest of the game. This run is not for the faint of heart!
Magic Other
Difficulty: Hard
Items:
- Any gemmed Robe
- Gypsy Robe(Old-gen console version)
- Magic Hat(Desktop, Console, Old-gen console and Mobile versions)
- Wizard Hat
- Jungle armor
- Ancient Cobalt armor
- Adamantite armor
- Titanium armor
- Hallowed armor
- Spectre armor
- Nebula armor(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
- Sky Fracture(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
- Magic Dagger
- Medusa Head(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
- Blood Thorn(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
- Spirit Flame(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
- Shadowflame Hex Doll(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
- Crystal Serpent(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
- Magical Harp
- Toxic Flask(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
- Charged Blaster Cannon(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
- Stellar Tune(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
- Nightglow(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
- Nebula Arcanum(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
- Nebula Blaze(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
- Last Prism(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
Notes: While having a difficult early-game, this class scales up extremele well and has access to the most unique magic weapons in the game. This allows for a wide variety of playstyles and lets the player approach combat in different ways. This class combines well with classes that have access to an early weapon.
Frost Mage
Difficulty: Normal
The Frost Mage cools his enemies down to sub zero. He can use the following items:
- Winter Cape(Desktop, Console, Old-gen console and Mobile versions)
- Sapphire Robe
- Wizard Hat
- Jungle armor
- Ancient Cobalt armor
- Adamantite armor
- Titanium armor
- Hallowed armor
- Spectre armor
- Nebula armor(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
- Snowball
- Frost Daggerfish(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
- Sapphire Staff
- Water Bolt
- Aqua Scepter
Notes: Having easy access to an early game weapon makes this class a well balanced one. In order to get the Sapphire Staff you might need to get an Extractinator if your world contains Tungsten Ore in stead of Silver Ore. Don't forget to make use of the new Luck mechanic when you grind your Silt Blocks! Fishing Crates is also a solution to this, but seems a slower process than extracting. Pre Skeletron its damage is on the low side, making bosses on Expert Mode difficult, while on Master Mode even more so. Once Skeletron is dead, this class becomes alot stronger and retains this power all throughout the rest of the game. Also, the Flower of Frost is stronger than it looks!
Inferno
Difficulty: Hard
The Inferno just wants to set the world on fire. He uses the following items to do so:
- Devil Horns(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
- Flame Waker Boots(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
- Ruby Robe
- Wizard Hat
- Meteor armor
- Adamantite armor
- Titanium armor
- Apprentice armor(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
- Dark Artist armor(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
- Spectre armor
- Nebula armor(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
- Wand of Sparking(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
- Ruby Staff
- Flameburst Rod(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
- Book of Skulls
- Imp Staff(Desktop, Console, Old-gen console and Mobile versions)
- Flamelash
- Flower of Fire
- Spirit Flame(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
- Flameburst Cane(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
- Cursed Flames
- Clinger Staff(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
- Meteor Staff(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
- Inferno Fork
- Flameburst Staff(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
- Heat Ray
- Nebula Blaze(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
Notes: You have to play in The Corruption to get two of your hardmode weapons (Cursed Flames and Clinger Staff). If you are unlucky and your world contains Platinum Ore instead of Gold Ore you need to grab an Extractinator and grind Silt Block to get your Ruby Staff. Don't forget to make use of the new Luck mechanic when you grind your Silt Blocks! Fishing Crates is also a solution to this, but seems a slower process than extracting. Because this class has a lot of placed Weapons it benefits to set up an Guide:Arena to accomodate the use of these Weapons.
Winions (WIP)
Difficulty: Hard
This class is all about using his Winions to do his work for him. It uses the following items:
- Bee armor(Desktop, Console, Old-gen console and Mobile versions)

- Finch Staff(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
- Slime Staff
- Hornet Staff(Desktop, Console, Old-gen console and Mobile versions)
- Vampire Frog Staff(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
- Imp Staff(Desktop, Console, Old-gen console and Mobile versions)
- Firecracker(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
- Cool Whip(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
- Durendal(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
- Dark Harvest(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
- Kaleidoscope(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
- Morning Star(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
- Blade Staff(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
- Spider Staff(Desktop, Console, Old-gen console and Mobile versions)
- Pirate Staff(Desktop, Console, Old-gen console and Mobile versions)
- Sanguine Staff(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
- Optic Staff(Desktop, Console, Old-gen console and Mobile versions)
- Deadly Sphere Staff(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
- Pygmy Staff
- Raven Staff
- Desert Tiger Staff(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
- Tempest Staff
- Terraprisma(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
- Xeno Staff(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
- Stardust Cell Staff(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
- Stardust Dragon Staff(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions)
Notes: This class has a very hard early game. You have to get a Finch Staff from any of the wooden Chests in the surface or underground Layers or you have to find a Slime Staff or slime Statues to force the drop of a Slime Staff. It is highly recommended to allow yourself to make multiple small Worlds (of the same Difficulty) in order to find the Finch Staff. By getting a weapon you can start filling the Bestiary in order to get the Leather Whip. With these weapons you can try to get the Snapthorn, which will boost your damage output by a lot.
