Bestiary
The Bestiary is an in-game catalog of Terraria's various entities, including NPCs, enemies, critters, and bosses. On the
Desktop version, it can be viewed by opening the inventory and pressing ⚒ Use / Attack on the book icon located to the right of the item trash can, at the bottom right of the inventory. On the
Mobile version, it can be viewed by opening the settings and tapping the Bestiary button.
Each entity has its own entry in the Bestiary, which includes a flavor text and the following statistics (adjusted to the world's difficulty and seed):
- Biomes
Health
Damage
Defense
Knockback resistance
Rarity, on a 0–5 star scale
Coin drops- Item drop rates
Kill count
Initially, no information is available about any entity. The Bestiary is progressively unlocked as the player interacts with the entities in the world, primarily by killing enemies. Bestiary progress is tied to a world, not a character. Unlocking 10% of the entities in the Bestiary (54 entries) makes the Zoologist NPC available, who sells progressively more items (e.g. the Bunny License) as the player completes more of the Bestiary.
There are 540 Bestiary entries in total. They can be sorted and filtered by various criteria, including statistics, locations, times, events, etc.
Progression
The Bestiary of a world is initially empty after world generation. Depending on the type of an entity, its entry is unlocked in different ways:
- Enemies and bosses: Entries are unlocked by killing the entity.
- Critters: Entries are unlocked by coming into proximity with the critter.[1] The range is approximately 15 tiles; see Notes for details.
- NPCs: Entries are unlocked by opening the NPC's dialogue window.[2]
Interacting with an entity in this way for the first time immediately unlocks its Bestiary entry. At the bottom of the Bestiary is a bar that fills as more entries of the Bestiary are unlocked, allowing players to track their progress. Hovering the cursor over it will display the exact percentage.
The Bestiary entries of enemies initially only include very little information. Killing enemies subsequent times reveals more information in their Bestiary entries, as a secondary, per-entry progression system consisting of four stages:[3]
| Kill count | Info unlocked | |
|---|---|---|
| 1 kill | Name, portrait, biome | Name, portrait, biome, description |
| 20% of banner kill count Usually: 10 kills
|
Stats, description, coin drop amount | Stats, coin drop amount |
| 50% of banner kill count Usually: 25 kills
|
List of dropped items | |
| 100% of banner kill count Usually: 50 kills
|
Exact item drop rate and amount | |
- Banner kill count refers to the number of kills required for the first enemy banner to be dropped. The banner kill count of the majority of enemies is 50, but certain enemies have non-default kill count requirements.
- For example, Doctor Bones has a banner kill count of 10, so the information in his Bestiary entry is extended after 2, 5, and 10 kills.
- This secondary progression system only applies to regular enemies as well as event-exclusive mini-bosses of the Pumpkin Moon and Frost Moon. Entries of bosses (and their minions), critters, and NPCs always include the full information immediately.
- Only the first kill is required for an enemy's Bestiary entry to be considered unlocked by the Zoologist and the overall Bestiary progression. Subsequent kills merely "extend" the unlocked entries.
- Same "types" of enemies with multiple entries (such as Zombies) have a separate tracker for each entry (50 Pincushion Zombie kills, 50 Slimed Zombie kills, etc).
Sorting and filtering
The Bestiary's entries can be displayed and ranked in ascending to descending order in the following ways. Option categories, with the exception of the default "Unlocks" option, will also categorize unknown entries.
Unlocks: Set by default, and displays all unlocked entries first above entries that have not been unlocked yet.
Bestiary ID: Sorts all entries into numerical order (starting from 1).
Name: Sorts all entries into alphabetical order (starting from A).
Attack: Sorts all entries from entities with the highest to lowest damage stat.
Defense: Sorts all entries from entities with the highest to lowest defense stat.
Coins: Sorts all entries from entities with the highest to the lowest amount of dropped coins.
HP: Sorts all entries from entities with the highest to lowest health stat.
Rarity: Sorts all entries from entities with the highest to lowest rarity.
ID (
only): Sorts all entries by their NPC IDs.[a]
60 different filters are available for hiding certain entries from view. They are listed here as they appear from top-left to bottom-right in the Bestiary. The "Number of creatures" column may show double-counted creatures that appear in multiple biomes.
Entries
Excluded entities
Certain enemies do not have Bestiary entries at all:
- Pirate's Curse
- Spiked Slime, due to there not being a way to have it spawn in Classic worlds
- Golden Slime, due to there not being a way to have it spawn in any world seed except for Celebrationmk10 and Get fixed boi
- Jungle Mimic, due to there not being a way to have it spawn in any world seed except for Celebrationmk10 and Get fixed boi
Certain entities in the game do not have distinct Bestiary entries for their variants:
- Mimic
- Chest
- Gold Chest
- Shadow Chest
- Butterfly
- Monarch Butterfly
- Sulphur Butterfly
- Zebra Swallowtail Butterfly
- Ulysses Butterfly
- Julia Butterfly
- Red Admiral Butterfly
- Purple Emperor Butterfly
- Tree Nymph Butterfly
- Dragonfly
- Black Dragonfly
- Blue Dragonfly
- Green Dragonfly
- Orange Dragonfly
- Red Dragonfly
- Yellow Dragonfly
- Zombie
- Armed Zombie
- Armed Pincushion Zombie
- Armed Slimed Zombie
- Armed Swamp Zombie
- Armed Twiggy Zombie
- Armed Female Zombie
- Armed Torch Zombie
- Skeleton
- Bone Throwing Skeleton
- Bone Throwing Headache Skeleton
- Bone Throwing Misassembled Skeleton
- Bone Throwing Pantless Skeleton
- Size variants are also not given unique entries, likely due to how widespread they are and their potential to bloat the Bestiary far beyond any reasonable benefit for comprehensiveness.
Notes
- Defeating Skeletron will also unlock the complete entry for the Dungeon Guardian.
- Defeating the Lunatic Cultist will also unlock the complete entries for the Phantasm Dragon and Ancient Vision.
- For detecting the player's proximity to critters:[4]
- An invisible rectangle is drawn around the player which extends 300 pixels from the right and left edges of their bounding box, and 200 pixels from the top and bottom of their bounding box, which translates to 18.75 tiles in either horizontal direction and 12.5 tiles in either vertical direction. If a critter enters this rectangle, it will count towards its Bestiary entry.
- The player has a default width of 20 pixels and a height of 42 pixels (though these values can change under certain situations such as when riding mounts).
- In total, the critter detection rectangle has a full default width of 620 pixels (38.75 tiles) and a full default height of 442 pixels (27.625 tiles).
- The Bestiary is linked to the world. If a fully unlocked character is brought to a new world, the Bestiary will be empty for them in that world.
- An exception is The Torch God, which will be unlocked immediately if the Torch God's Favor has been used by the character.
- Interactions (enemy/boss kills and critter/NPC encounters) from before the introduction of the Bestiary, i.e. before the 1.4.0.1 update, are not counted towards progression.
- The Bestiary uses a separate kill counter from the one used by the Tally Counter; this is evident due to the fact that worlds created before 1.4.0.1 require killing each creature all over again in order to fill out the entries.
- Three enemies are somewhat exclusive: Crawdad, Giant Shelly, and Salamander. In a given world, there can be only two of them, chosen randomly; the third will not appear. This is taken into account by the Bestiary progression logic, and the missing enemy will register as unlocked when the other two exclusive creatures are unlocked.
- Old One's Army enemies always show sprites and stats of their Tier 3 variant.
- Encountering any gold critter will automatically unlock every other gold critter's entries, meaning that it is only necessary to come into proximity with one type of gold critter.
- Killing enemies spawned from statues does increase their respective progression levels, and is the same for encountering statue-spawned critters.
- The search function of the Bestiary allows several aliases for certain bosses:[5]

- A Bestiary entry's portrait background can include a biome background, a semi-transparent color layer, and/or a map background overlay image. The biome backgrounds are the same as the fullscreen minimap biome backgrounds; the overlay images are shown below.
Tips
- Enemy-spawning statues can be used to fill out information on rarer enemies, such as Goblin Scouts, Medusas, and Mimics.
- If the Pigron Statue is obtained, then there is no need to create a Corrupt/Crimson/Hallowed Ice biome, since the statue can spawn all three Pigron variations, and it is the only unique enemy found in those respective sub-biomes.
- The entries for the Dungeon Guardian and Tortured Soul can be obtained by talking to the Clothier and Tax Collector, respectively.
- In order to reach 100% Bestiary completion, a player-made Corruption or Crimson biome must be made, depending on which one the world already has. This includes a variant of the Surface, Underground, Desert, Underground Desert, and Ice biomes to collect all Crimson/Corruption variants of enemies and critters.
- The Dryad, when spoken to in a Graveyard during Hardmode, sells seeds of the opposite evil biome.
- Drunk worlds include both evil biomes.
- Furthermore, it is necessary to trigger the Halloween and Christmas seasonal events to unlock Santa Claus and all variants of enemies and critters.
- Reaching the fifteenth waves of either the Pumpkin and Frost Moon triggers a single in-game day of Halloween and Christmas respectively.
- Changing the device's date allows skipping the time that would have to be waited otherwise. See the events' pages for details.
Trivia
- It seems fitting that the Guide is at the very start of the Bestiary and the Moon Lord is at the very end, as one's journey through the world of Terraria begins with the Guide and ends with the Moon Lord.
- The Gnome is the first enemy listed in the Bestiary.
- The maximum Bestiary completion percentage that can be obtained in a pre-Hardmode world (including bringing items over from a Hardmode world) is 65.37%, or 353 entries.
- This includes enemies summoned through Hardmode event and boss-summoning items, statue spawns, and town NPCs who spawn in secret world seeds.
- Without bringing items over from a Hardmode world, the maximum completion percentage is 54.26%, or 293 entries.
- Icons exist inside Terraria's game files for an additional 5 filters, which go unused:
Oasis
Blizzard
Slime Rain
Hardmode
"Item Spawn"
- Unused descriptions for every biome and event filter, including the unused ones, can be found in the localization files.

- It is possible to complete 19.07% of the Bestiary on normal seed without killing any enemies at all.
- This includes unlocking exclusive Halloween and Christmas critters.
- On Drunk world seed percent goes to 19.44%, because the Party Girl replaces the Guide as the staring NPC and occuring Parties allow the Cool Slime to move in.
- On Celebrationmk10 world seed percent goes to 20%, because list of starting NPCs include: the Steampunker, the Princess and the Party Girl, and occuring Parties allow the Cool Slime to move in. Floating Islands generate with Hallowed grass on them, allowing Lightning Bugs to spawn.
- On Don't dig up world seed percent goes to 19.44%, because the Tax Collector replaces the Guide as the starting NPC, which also unlocks Tortured Soul Bestiary entry.
- On Get fixed boi world seed percent goes to 20.19%, because list of starting NPCs include: the Steampunker, the Princess, the Party Girl, the Tax Collector, which unlocks Tortured Soul entry, and the Diva Slime. After world creation Party starts immediately, which allows the Cool Slime to move in before Party ends. Even if all the NPCs die at dusk, the player can still talk to them an unlock their Bestiary entries, which do not disappear after NPCs death.
- The Moon Lord has the only Bestiary entry without a background or biome, likely due to its out-of-this-world nature. The background on its portrait is completely black and empty, and the void filter is not seen.
- Although the star rarity system has a range of 0–5, there are no entries with a rarity of 0 stars.
