The Grenade Launcher used with Rocket I. Note the bouncing ability of the grenade.
The Grenade Launcher is a Hardmode, post-Plantera launcher that consumes rockets and launches a grenade with a timed fuse. The grenade explodes when the fuse expires, or if it comes into contact with an enemy. The Grenade Launcher has a (Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) 1/7 (14.29%) or (Old-gen console and 3DS versions) 1/6 (16.67%) chance to be dropped from Plantera, and it is guaranteed to drop the first time Plantera is defeated (unless in Expert Mode(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions), where she drops her Treasure Bag instead). In addition, (Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) 50–149 / (Old-gen console and 3DS versions) 20–49 Rocket Is will be dropped alongside the Grenade Launcher.
Its best modifier is Unreal.
Notes
- The grenades fired from the Grenade Launcher are strongly affected by gravity and can inflict massive self-damage. For this reason, using it in any tight area requires exceptional care to avoid it bouncing back to the player.
- The grenades cannot be reflected by enemies like the Selenian(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions), as they will instantly explode on contact.
Tips
- Compared to the Rocket Launcher, the Grenade Launcher can be obtained much earlier but has an arc and will not explode on contact with blocks right away. The Grenade Launcher also deals (Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) 33.33% / (Old-gen console and 3DS versions) 10% more damage.
- (Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) However, the Rocket Launcher has a direct hit bonus dealing 83% more damage.
Trivia
- The Grenade Launcher resembles the real-life China Lake grenade launcher in design and operation, being a fairly fast-firing grenade launcher.
- Compared to the real version, the Grenade Launcher in Terraria has a smaller receiver, a longer pump/foregrip, a folding stock and pistol grip, with the trigger moved forwards to around where the loading port is on the real weapon.
- Despite the name, the Grenade Launcher cannot fire Grenades, as they are hand grenades and are incompatible with it.
- Certain real-life grenade launcher rounds resemble rockets more closely than grenades.
- Despite being the first launcher that the player can obtain, it fires special projectiles instead of rockets.
- Its firing sound is atypical for ranged weapons, resembling that of a spring-loaded mechanism. This makes sense as an explosive propellant would likely detonate the grenade prematurely.
