The Heat Ray attacking a Target Dummy.
The Heat Ray is a Hardmode, post-Golem magic weapon that auto-fires yellow laser beams which instantaneously travel to their maximum distance but cannot pierce enemies. The Heat Ray has a 1/7 (14.29%) chance of being dropped by Golem.
Its best modifier is Mythical.
Notes
- While the player is holding the Heat Ray, a tank outfitted with a Lihzahrd Brick-themed base and a glass container (that appears to be filled with solar heat energy) appears on the player's back. The Leaf Blower, Elf Melter, Clentaminator, and Terraformer also have this feature.
Tips
- The instantaneous speed and perfect accuracy of the Heat Ray's beam makes it particularly effective for dealing with fast, distant, or flying enemies.
- The Heat Ray excels at outputting high damage to single targets, and, despite its lack of homing abilities, is a great weapon for dynamic and fast-moving bosses such as the Empress of Light.
- While its quick fire rate also makes it a viable weapon for crowd control, the Staff of Earth (another Golem drop) is better suited for such a purpose.
Trivia
- This weapon and its tooltip are references to the 1898 science fiction novel The War of the Worlds by English author H. G. Wells. In the novel, Martians primarily use "Heat-Rays", powerful instantaneous beam cannons that are mounted onto fighting machines, tripodal all-terrain walkers that serve as their primary weapons of warfare. Both in the novel and in later stage and film adaptations of The War of the Worlds, Martians holler "Aloo!" or "Oola!" as a form of battle cry.
- Even when the player is out of mana, the tank on the back of the player appears to still be full.
