Animation of the Mushroom Spear.

The Mushroom Spear is a Hardmode spear that summons seven spinning mushroom projectiles when used. The projectiles linger in midair and deal 33.33% of the spear's damage (20 base damage) but do not inflict knockback.[1] Although the mushroom projectiles appear to visually fade out, they will always inflict their full damage. They will disappear 1.07 seconds after being spawned by the spear,[2] if they do not hit an enemy beforehand. The Mushroom Spear can be purchased from the Truffle for 70 GC after at least one of the mechanical bosses has been defeated.

Its best modifier is Godly or Demonic. Both modifiers increase the average damage output by the same amount. However, Ruthless might be preferred if the player already has very high critical strike chance.

Notes

  • The mushrooms have no "piercing" ability, and thus disappear after hitting a single enemy.
  • Mushrooms appear at the point of the spear at a point during the thrust. Therefore, they will be "stacked" on top of one another if the player is retreating while thrusting, or spread out further if advancing.

Tips

  • Combined with the Frost armor and/or the Magma Stone (or any of its upgrades), both the weapon and the mushrooms will emit a small amount of light, making the Mushroom Spear extremely useful for exploring underground and checking for nearby caves since the spinning mushrooms can go through walls.
  • Due to the spinning mushroom mechanic, the Mushroom Spear can be used to attack enemies through walls without consuming any mana or ammo and without cooldown.
  • The mushroom projectiles last for a little over a second after spawning, meaning they can hit an enemy after the player has already retracted the spear.
  • Because the mushrooms have no knockback, it is often possible for enemies to walk through several of them. Therefore, they do not serve as an effective barrier to keep enemies away.
