The Thunder Zapper is a pre-Hardmode magic weapon that launches a fast-moving, non-piercing projectile that is unaffected by gravity and will disappear with a visual explosion that does no damage after traveling for about one second or when hitting a solid block. The projectile moves up and down in a randomized zig-zag pattern horizontally, but not vertically (traveling straight when shooting directly up or down). The Thunder Zapper can be found in Sandstone Chests in the lower 3/7ths of the Underground Desert and in Oasis Crates and Mirage Crates obtained from fishing in the Oasis.

Its best modifier is Mythical.

Tips

  • Due to the medium mana cost and the very fast speed at which it auto-casts, it can be seen as an alternative to the gem staves, doing higher single-target DPS than the highest-tier staves. However, it lacks piercing against multiple targets, and requires visiting a dangerous biome. It can more safely be obtained from fishing in an Oasis.
  • The zig-zag motion of the projectile facilitates some unusual trajectories, e.g. through a half-tile gap.
  • In Don't dig up worlds, the Thunder Zapper can be obtained from the lower Chests that spawn below the Underground Desert walls with much less risk.
  • If a Sandstone Chest contains a Storm Spear or Bast Statue as its primary item, the player is low enough to obtain the Thunder Zapper. Otherwise, they need to dig lower before they have a chance of finding one.
