Not to be confused with the boss, Skeletron.
The Skeleton is a pre-Hardmode enemy that frequently spawns in the Cavern layer as one of many variants. Regular Skeletons can be spawned by the Skeleton Statue.
Like many other enemies that follow the Fighter AI, Skeletons can open doors and Tall Gates(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions), albeit only during Blood Moons or rarely in Graveyards(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions). On Old-gen console and
, they can open doors at any time.
In Expert Mode(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions), certain Skeletons are able to throw bones when they are close to the player. Regular bone-throwing Skeletons can be spawned by the Bone Skeleton Statue in any difficulty.

Notes
- When regular Skeletons (ID 21) are trying to open a Tall Gate, their damage cannot be dodged by dodging effects (Holy Protection, Black Belt, etc.).[2]
Trivia
- There are many other skeleton-themed enemies in the game. Counting these enemies and all variants of the Skeleton enemy, there are more than 50 kinds.
|
- The internal name of the Astronaut Skeleton is misspelled as
SkeletonAstonaut
in the game code.[3] - The original Skeleton's head sprite remains used in the game for the Skull Lantern and Mechanical Skull items.
Skeleton sprite pre-1.0.3
- The Skeleton Banner appears to also be based on the sprite of the Skeleton prior to 1.0.3.
- The Carton of Milk(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) dropping from Skeletons is probably an allusion to the fact that dairy products like milk are rich in calcium, a chemical element whose ions are important for bone formation.
- The Alien Skeleton's appearance is likely a reference to the 1996 American science fiction comedy movie Mars Attacks!
Bestiary entries
- Skeletons: "Who needs muscles, skin, or even eyeballs? Skeletons get by with just the bones on their back, just as deadly as more fleshy foes."
- Halloween Skeletons: "Skeletons need to wear very elaborate costumes during Halloween, or else people think they are dressing up as skeletons."
