The Explosive Trap Rod, Cane, and Staff are special sentry summon weapons. They can summon the Explosive Trap sentry, which lasts for 10 minutes, remains stationary, and does not count against the player's minion capacity. Each Explosive Trap sentry is a small device on the ground that explodes when an enemy comes in close proximity. It does not disappear upon exploding, but remains at its summon point to explode repeatedly until its time is exhausted or the Old One's Army event ends. The Rod is sold by the Tavernkeep for 50000*5 , the Cane for 150000*15 , and the Staff for 600000*60 .
The Rod is always available. The Cane becomes available after defeating one mechanical boss, and the Staff becomes available after defeating Golem. The three different versions cause an identical effect, but with varying statistics, with the Staff being the most expensive and the most powerful.
These weapons cannot be used outside of the Old One's Army event until the event has been successfully completed. Completing the event on any difficulty allows Rods, Canes, and Staves alike to be used outside of the event.
During the Old One's Army event, Etherian Mana can be collected, which allows the placement of multiple Explosive Traps that remain permanently until the event is over. Etherian Mana cannot be used outside the event.
Explosive Trap sentries are boosted by the Huntress armor and Red Riding armor set bonuses, which increase their fire rates and cause them to inflict the Oiled debuff on struck enemies for 4–8.5 seconds.[1]
Their best modifier is Ruthless. The Mythical modifier provides the widest array of stat bonuses, but these primarily affect the initial summon rather than the resulting minion. Additionally, minions cannot deal critical hits. The only lasting advantage a Mythical Explosive Trap sentry summons has over a Ruthless one is knockback.

Notes
- Completing the Old One's Army event on any difficulty sets a hidden attribute for both the world it was completed on and the character who completed it. Any characters, including newly made ones, who visit that world may then use Rods, Canes, and Staves on any world. The character who completed the event may also use Rods, Canes, and Staves on any world.
- The Explosive Trap has a cooldown of 1.5 seconds after attacking. With the Huntress armor, this cooldown is reduced to 1 second, and with the Red Riding armor, it is reduced to 0.5 seconds.
- The sentry detects and damages enemies within a 9×9-tile rectangle centered 3 tiles above it.[2] This means that its range is 7.5 tiles above, 1.5 tiles below, and 4.5 tiles to either side.
Tips
- The Explosive Trap has a faint glow, and can be used to see into nearby surrounding caves.
- The Explosive Trap fires slowly and has a fairly insignificant range. When combined with Huntress armor or Red Riding armor, it fires much faster and benefits from the summon damage boosts of those sets. A cluster of 3 or 4 traps at each portal in the Old One's Army event can kill everything but Ogres before they leave the damage area.
