Not to be confused with Mothron, the Solar Eclipse enemy.

The Moth is a rare Hardmode enemy that spawns in the Underground Jungle. It flies around very slowly, and upon seeing the player, will direct its attention towards them and attempt to deal contact damage to them. Upon killing the Moth, there is a chance that it will drop Butterfly Dust, which is solely used to craft Butterfly Wings. On the Desktop version Desktop version, Console version Console version, and Mobile version Mobile version, the Butterfly Dust can only drop once any mechanical boss has been defeated in the current world.

It is one of the few entities that can be detected by the Lifeform Analyzer(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) or its upgrades. The Moth requires 25 kills to be awarded completion of its Bestiary entry and corresponding banner, as opposed to the usual 50 kills.

Trivia

  • The BestiaryBestiary entry for the Moth: "Rarely, exposure to jungle toxins causes certain moths to mutate to enormous size. They release a valuable dust on death."

History

  • Desktop 1.4.0.1: Now only drops Butterfly Dust after one mechanical boss has been defeated.
