Cat and Guide
The Cat (White breed) and the Guide sharing a house.
"Cat" redirects here. For the pet, see Unlucky Yarn.

The Cat is a town pet. It arrives at dawn (4:30 AM) the day after the player uses the Cat License, which is purchased from the Zoologist for 5 GC. The Cat does not count towards the NPCs' "crowded" limit and hence will not affect NPC happiness, although it does count as a regular town NPC for the purpose of the Pylon network. There are six breeds of Cat, with one randomly being chosen when it arrives. Only one Cat can be present at a time.

Sleeping Cat (White breed).

Just like any other town NPC, the Cat requires a valid house and can be manually assigned to one via its NPC flag. The Cat can share a house already occupied by another NPC (although not with another town pet). It may not be able to share a house with another NPC if the house is too small, e.g. if there is no space for its home tile (standing point).

The Cat can be talked to with the Open / Activate button, like any other town NPC. It offers a "Pet" option, which places the player directly in front of the Cat when selected, and displays an animation of them petting the Cat, an effect that is purely visual. It only works if there are at least two flat tiles on the same level as the Cat in front of it. Using any item, taking damage, or closing the dialogue window terminates the animation.

Like with the Angler, the status message displayed when the Cat is killed is "<Name of Cat> has left!". It will respawn within the next days, and may respawn as a different breed. Furthermore, using a Cat License while a Cat is already present causes the Cat to disappear and be "exchanged", respawning the next dawn with its name and breed rerolled.

Trivia

  • The Bestiary page for the Town Cat depicts the Siamese cat breed by default.
  • Town Cats are the only type of town pet that can sit in chairs.[1]

Many names are references:

  • "Adol" may be a reference to Adol Christin, the protagonist of the series of action role-playing games Ys. "Dogi", the name of his best friend, also appears as a possible name for the Dog.
  • "Arbus" and "Ater" may be references to the characters of the same names from the video game The Gray Garden by Deep-Sea-Prisoner.
  • "Bandit" may be a reference to Angela's cat from the sitcom television series The Office.
  • "Blaze" is a reference to Blaze the Cat from the Japanese video game series Sonic the Hedgehog. The name being attributed to the silver cat could be a reference to Blaze's partner, Silver the Hedgehog.
  • "Bob" is likely a reference to the book A Street Cat Named Bob by English author James Bowen, as well as his other works.
  • "By-Tor" is a reference to the Rush song By-Tor And The Snow Dog.
  • "Charlie" is likely either a reference to Charley Says, a British series of short cut-out animated cartoon public information movies for children, which includes an orange tabby named Charley, or the German animation studio Dingo Pictures, which frequently re-used a character model of an orange-ish cat, often naming it Charlie.
  • "Cleo" is a reference to the character of the same name from The Catillac Cats.
  • "Freya" and "Odin" may be references to a goddess and a god of the same names, respectively, from Norse mythology.
  • "Garfield" is a reference to the protagonist of the American comic strip of the same name.

  • "Valerie" is likely a reference to Valérie from the role-playing video game OFF.
  • The BestiaryBestiary entry for the Town Cat: "Lazy, devious, might bring presents. Presents might have once been breathing."
