The Necromancer is a Hardmode, post-Plantera enemy that spawns in the Dungeon after Plantera is defeated. It attacks by rapidly firing Shadow Beams at the player, thin rays of purple light that reflect off walls multiple times. They travel at an extremely high velocity, being fired nearly instantly, and inflict the Slow debuff. Necromancers teleport to a different location on-screen after firing projectiles six times or when being hit.

Necromancers spawn most often in areas of the Dungeon backed by brick walls. They can also spawn in other areas, but with a significantly reduced chance.

  • Necromancers can only teleport onto solid blocks. If there is no valid place to teleport to, they will remain in the same location.
  • They are only able to teleport while resting on a solid block.
  • A Necromancer's attack is always directly aimed at the player, regardless of obstacles.

  • Weapons that stick to enemies are exceptionally useful, as they remain on the Necromancer after the teleport. The Piranha Gun, Daybreak(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions), and Bone Javelins(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) are viable options.
  • Weapons that deal high damage in single hits are effective against Necromancers. Weapons that fire multiple projectiles simultaneously may be able to land multiple hits before they teleport as well.
  • Weapons with homing capacities or minions can continue to track Necromancers after they teleport. The Sanguine Staff(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) is particularly effective at this, often causing the Necromancer to rapidly teleport as it takes damage and quickly dies.

  • Despite inflicting the Slow debuff, they do not drop Fast Clocks.
  • Necromancers are magicians that engage in communication with the dead, although in Terraria they do not have this ability.
  • The BestiaryBestiary entry for the Necromancer: "In life, these sorcerers bore the Necromantic Sign of their order, and they shall continue to do so forever . . . even in death."

  • Desktop 1.4.4: Now has a grace period of over a second after teleportation before they begin firing, which is the same as what Diabolists always had.
  • Desktop
    • Is now less likely to teleport when hit.
    • Can now drop its own respective banner.
    • Drop chance of Shadowbeam Staff increased from 2.5% to 5%.
