This article is about the Hardmode enemy. For the mount, see Scaly Truffle(Desktop, Console, Old-gen console and Mobile versions).

The Pigron is a Hardmode enemy found in the Ice biome when it is overlapped with the Underground Hallow, Underground Corruption, or Underground Crimson. It comes in multiple colors, depending on which biome it spawns in, but all share the same statistics.

Pigrons have a special ability to become transparent and nearly invisible, allowing them to fly through solid blocks. As a transparent Pigron starts to attack, it will become visible again. When it starts moving towards the player, it occasionally makes an audible growl. If it is in its solid, visible state and is blocked by solid blocks on its path to the player, it will become transparent again to pass through them.

Notes

  • Pigrons are purple in the Underground Corruption, pink in the Underground Hallow, and red in the Underground Crimson.
  • Pigrons can only spawn on Snow Blocks, Thin Ice, Ice Blocks and Pink Ice Blocks [1][2].
    • The type of ice is irrelevant when the game is deciding what type of Pigron to spawn (i.e. a Corrupt Pigron can spawn on Pink Ice Blocks as long as the player is considered in Corruption).
  • When the Pigron growls, it sounds like an oddly distorted boss noise when summoned or attacking.
  • In rare cases, Underground Cabins will have a functional trap consisting of a pressure plate and a Pigron Statue. This allows them to be spawned pre-Hardmode, however, they will not have any drops. The variant is randomized when they are spawned this way.
  • For a Pigron to turn transparent and phase through blocks, its direct line of sight to the player must have been obstructed by blocks for an extended period of time. Therefore, it is possible to trap Pigrons by allowing them a hole for them to observe the player at all times but making it not large enough for them to pass.

Tips

  • Utilizing the Hunter Potion makes finding and dispatching a Pigron much easier, as it glows when it would normally be nearly invisible.
  • Pay attention to growls while in the Ice biome, since Pigrons will usually be heard sooner than they are seen, and the sound they make is unique.
  • The Pigron Statue can be used to easily unlock all three variants in the Bestiary(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions), saving the player the trouble of having to create all of the respective biomes.

Trivia

  • Pigron is a portmanteau of the words pig and dragon. This was confirmed by Cenx in the IRC.
  • Despite Pigrons coming in three different colors and slight variations, the banner and minecart (along with the Scaly Truffle's Pigron Mount) are always pink.
  • There is a discontinued plush Pigron sold in real life by Toynk Toys, based on its purple appearance in the Underground Corruption.[3]
  • The BestiaryBestiary entry for the Pigrons: "This elusive dragon-pig hybrid has excellent stealth capabilities despite its rotund figure. It is uncertain how they came to exist."

  1. Information taken from the Desktop version Desktop 1.4.4.9 source code, method SpawnNPC() in Terraria.NPC.cs.
  2. Due to the fact that the code for spawning Pigrons lies after the spawning of Crimson/Corrupt/Hallowed, it is not reachable if the spawning tile is Red Ice Block or Purple Ice Block, spawning on a Hallowed tile will not always success, so there is still a chance to spawn a Pigron on Pink Ice Blocks.
