This article is about the rare, resilient enemy found in the Snow biome during Blizzards. For the post-Plantera boss, see
Golem. For the enemy found in Granite Caves, see
Granite Golem. For the
Hardmode enemy in the
Cavern layer, see
Rock Golem.
The Ice Golem is a rare Hardmode enemy that spawns in the Snow biome during Blizzards at any time of day or night. The Ice Golem walks slowly, and, when it has a clear line of sight with the player, fires high-velocity Frost Beam projectiles that chill and occasionally freeze them in place. Its movement speed and the rate at which it fires beams increase exponentially the further its health is depleted. It has a guaranteed chance to drop a Frost Core, the main ingredient for the Frost armor, Cool Whip, and Blizzard in a Bottle.
It is one of the few entities that can be detected by the Lifeform Analyzer(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) or its upgrades. The Ice Golem requires 25 kills to be awarded completion of its Bestiary entry and corresponding banner, as opposed to the usual 50 kills.
Notes
- The cool-down between fired Frost Beams is random,[1] lasting between 1 second and 15.48 seconds. These limits are affected by the Ice Golem's health – as it takes damage, the average cool-down decreases linearly. For instance, at 50% health (2,000 / 4,000 / 6,000), the cool-down lasts between 0.75 seconds and 7.99 seconds. When the Ice Golem takes damage, there is a 1/3 (33.33%) chance that the cool-down will be increased by a random duration of up to half a second.
- If the Ice Golem does not have a direct line of sight to the player or if the player is affected by the Frozen debuff, the Frost Beam will not be fired and will go on cool-down.[1]
Tips
Since the Ice Golem is a very tall enemy, the player may want to use naturally found terrain features to stop and block its attacks, allowing easy grinding even in early Hardmode.
Unused Blizzard Bestiary filter for the Ice Golem as of
1.4.0.5(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions).
- Even though Ice Golems can be detected with the Lifeform Analyzer(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions), it is more effective to fly around while trying to hunt them down and just watch for Frost Beams.
- Once an Ice Golem is trapped, a yoyo(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) is useful for taking it down. The Hel-Fire is particularly preferable since it inflicts the Hellfire debuff.
- The Ice Golem can be prevented from firing Frost Beams if the player continuously deals damage to it before it can fire beams, even if they are directly within its line of sight. This can be done with rapid-fire weapons such as the Uzi, Bananarang, Chain Guillotines(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions), Fetid Baghnakhs(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions), Blood Thorn(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions), and a few early-Hardmode summon weapons such as the Spider Staff or Blade Staff(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions). However, the player will need to watch out for other enemies that spawn during the Blizzard so as to not get overwhelmed while stunlocking the Ice Golem.
- The Ice Golem can easily despawn if it goes off-screen, so it is best not to go too far from it.
Trivia
- Similar to the Sand Elemental(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions), Mothron(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions), and the Dreadnautilus(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions), the Ice Golem is not a boss or mini-boss even though it has stats comparable to a boss. This is evidenced by its lack of a boss health bar(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions), the fact that it drops a banner, not a trophy, and the fact that it does not drop a relic in Master Mode.
- In Jewish folklore, a golem (/ˈɡoʊləm/, GOH-ləm; Hebrew: גולם) is an animated anthropomorphic being that is created entirely from inanimate matter (usually clay or mud). The word was used to mean an amorphous, unformed material in Psalms and medieval writing.
- The Bestiary entry for the Ice Golem: "Sub-zero temperatures, blinding snow flurries, and being blasted apart by an icy construct are some of the dangers of blizzards."
