Dragonflies are small, rare critters which can be found on surface. When approached, they will fly a short distance up and away from the player.

Dragonflies can only spawn during the day when the wind speed is lower than 20 mph[1], with following restrictions: when the player is in a town, dragonflies can only spawn during rain; otherwise, they can only spawn when not raining. Furthermore, there must be at least one cattail within a 61×41-tile rectangle area centered on the spawning tile.[2] The dragonfly will spawn on the cattail instead of the original spawning tile. As a result, they are capable of spawning on screen.[3] Black, Orange and Yellow variants can spawn at cattails near Sand Blocks (usually in Desert), whereas Blue, Green and Red variants can spawn at cattails near pure Grass or Mowed grass (usually in Forest).[4] Note that this is determined by the original spawning tile, not the tile the cattail grows, e.g. a Red Dragonfly can spawn on a cattail growing on a Sand Block as long as there is a Grass tile nearby.

Dragonflies have only 5 health and no defense, and can be damaged by other enemies and players.

Dragonflies can be caught with any Bug Net to be carried around in the inventory and released later, or crafted into animated decorative furniture (Dragonfly Jars). Once crafted, the Dragonflies cannot be released again, unless the furniture item is de-crafted via Shimmer(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions).

Dragonflies can be spawned by the Dragonfly Statue, however statue-spawned critters cannot be caught with any Bug Net, and will disappear in a puff of smoke when the player attempts to do so.

There is a 1/400 (0.25%) chance for a Gold Dragonfly to spawn in place of an ordinary one.

Notes

  • In Don't dig up or Get fixed boi worlds, dragonflies can spawn regardless of elevation.
  • Dragonflies can build up their speed over time and easily outstrip players, even those with Hermes Boots or its various upgrades.
    • The speed they can build up is immense, up to 82 mph.[5]

Tips

  • Although cattails only grow naturally in the water, removing the water does not destroy them. This can be utilized to give dragonflies a higher spawn chance, since removing water prevents the spawning of water-related creatures.
  • If looking to farm dragonflies, it is advised to remove all but one cattail and wait about 55 tiles left (or right) to that cattail. This single cattail would enable proper tiles offscreen to spawn dragonflies, and the dragonflies may spawn on screen. The player may also build a high wall on the edge of the screen to block other enemies from moving in (so they will despawn soon) and build a roof around the cattail to prevent dragonflies from flying away.
  • Due to the immense speed the dragonflies can build up, the player should leave themselves some space to accelerate before attempting to catch a dragonfly.

Trivia

  • The BestiaryBestiary entry for the dragonflies: "A swift-flying insect which hunts mosquitoes. Comes in a variety of colors. Fish are somewhat attracted to these."
