I sense a kindred spirit in the Etherian Dark Mages. A pity they are our enemies, I would have liked to learn from them.

The Witch Doctor

The Dark Mage is a mini-boss that spawns during the Old One's Army event during wave 5 in Tier 1 and during waves 4 and 6 in Tier 3.

Behavior

The Dark Mage hovers slightly above the ground and randomly chooses between three attacks:

  • The Dark Mage summons an orb of Dark EnergyDark Energy and hurls it directly at the player, dealing 80 / 160 / 240 damage.
  • The Dark Mage summons a large rune on the ground, which then generates a large area of light that heals most enemies within its 62.5-tile range, restoring up to 500 health. The rune cannot affect itself or other Dark Mages and only heals enemies who have more than 30 maximum health and deal at least 1 damage.[1]
  • The Dark Mage begins chanting as a Dark SigilDark Sigil appears above it, creating several clouds of purple particles on solid tiles within an approximately 30-tile range in its immediate vicinity. After a short moment, Old One's Skeletons will appear from these clouds, which can also damage the player as they are being summoned. This attack cannot be done if there are more than 200 NPCs in the world.

Notes

  • The Dark Mage will continue to respawn until Wave 5 reaches 99% in Tier 1. This allows it to be farmed by players with late pre-Hardmode and higher gear.
  • Like other members of the Old One's Army, the Dark Mage is immune to Teleporters and lava and will take half damage from traps.
  • The Dark Mage is restricted to hovering a bit above the ground. It cannot fly upwards, though the skeletons it summons can.
  • Two pet eggs, the Gato Egg and Dragon Egg drop from the Dark Mage; however, the Creeper Egg light pet drops from the Ogre.

Trivia

  • The Dark Mage has an Expert Mode-exclusive Treasure Bag in the game files, but it is currently unobtainable as it never actually drops it.
  • The pet drops from the Dark Mage in Tier 1 are one of the highest drop chances for any pet items from enemies, beaten out only by the Bone Key, a guaranteed drop from the Dungeon Guardian.
  • The War Table, War Table Banner, Dragon Egg, and Gato Egg are not affected by luck, unlike most uncommon loot drops. Thus, they will always drop at their listed drop rates.[3]
  • The Dark Mage cannot heal itself, other Dark Mages, or the Moon Lord.
  • If a boss reaches its second phase and is then fully healed by the Dark Mage, the boss will still maintain its current phase (with the exceptions of Santa-NK1, Plantera, and Queen Slime, as this will cause them to revert into the first form after being fully healed).
  • The BestiaryBestiary entry for the Dark Mage: "A small, levitating sorcerer from Etheria who wields dark magic and can even raise fresh minions for the Old One's Army."
