The Sea Snail is a rare pre-Hardmode enemy that spawns in the Ocean. The Sea Snail's spawn rate is the lowest of all enemies in the Ocean, one-third that of Squids. It slowly crawls along the seafloor while attempting to deal contact damage. When killed, it drops Purple Mucus, which is used solely to craft Purple Dye at a Dye Vat.

It is one of the few entities that can be detected by the Lifeform Analyzer(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) or its upgrades.

Tips

  • Farming Sea Snails can be sped up using Water Candles and Battle Potions, as with all rare enemies. In particular, the Solar Eclipse is very suitable for farming Sea Snails, since it highly increases the enemy spawn rate (almost as much as a Blood Moon). Notably, Solar Eclipse enemies cannot spawn in water. They are restricted to spawning on the nearby beach or in a cave below the seabed, and they rarely come into the Ocean water. Most of the time, the player will only fight the regular Ocean enemies with an increased spawn rate, and only very occasionally encounter a Solar Eclipse enemy.
    • Items that extend or eliminate the breath meter, such as the Diving Helmet or Neptune's Shell, allow the player to remain near the bottom of the Ocean (where Sea Snails are encountered) for extended periods of time.

Trivia

  • It closely resembles the Syrinx aruanus (commonly known as Australian trumpet or false trumpet), the largest extant snail (shelled gastropod) species and the largest (heaviest) gastropod in the world.
  • The Murex sea snail was used to create purple dye, a dye that was so rare that its value was its own weight in gold. This is also why most country flags do not contain purple.
  • The BestiaryBestiary entry for the Sea Snail: "This unusually large snail makes its home deep in the ocean. Its mucus can be manufactured into a purple dye."

History

  • Desktop 1.4.1: Fixed a typo in the Bestiary description (mucous to mucus).
