This article is about the Hardmode boss. For the quest fish, see Fishron. For the aquatic mount, see Cute Fishron. For the hardmode enemy, see Pigron.

Duke Fishron is a Hardmode boss. While he can be summoned as soon as Hardmode is initiated, he can pose a serious threat to new or underprepared players and should be fought later on in the game. Some players may challenge him with post-mechanical bosses gear, but most players may want to wait until post-Golem to battle him. Fighting Duke Fishron is completely optional and not required for game progression, but his defeat will reward the player with powerful weapons.

On the Old-gen console version Old-gen console version and Nintendo 3DSNintendo 3DS version version, Duke Fishron and Ocram are the final bosses due to the lack of the Moon Lord in these versions.

While Duke Fishron is alive, his exclusive music Duke Fishron will play. When Otherworldly music (Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) is enabled, the track Boss 2 (Otherworldly) will play instead.

On the Old-gen console version Old-gen console version and Nintendo 3DSNintendo 3DS version version, Boss 1 will play.

Summoning

Duke Fishron is summoned by fishing in the Ocean using a Truffle Worm as bait. The Truffle Worm is a rare critter that must be caught with the Bug Net, Lavaproof Bug Net, or Golden Bug Net in an underground Glowing Mushroom biome. Once the bobber bobs, reeling in the line spawns Duke Fishron, who emerges from the water, pauses for a moment, and then begins attacking the player. (Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) Duke Fishron is completely invulnerable during his summoning animation.

Summoning Duke Fishron does not require any other boss to have been defeated beforehand, and he can be summoned in a pre-Hardmode world by bringing a Truffle Worm from a Hardmode world. However, a world must be in Hardmode in order to obtain the Truffle Worms used to summon him. If summoned within 338 tiles of the westernmost or easternmost edges of a world (the same requirements necessary for an Ocean biome to exist), Duke Fishron can also be summoned by fishing in lava or honey. Upon fulfilling the requirements necessary for his summoning, Duke Fishron is always the resulting catch and always consumes the Truffle Worm used to summon him from the player's inventory, ignoring the player's Fishing Power and the effects of fishing-related buffs and accessories such as those from Crate Potions, Sonar Potions, and the Tackle Box or its upgrades.

Behavior

First phase

Duke Fishron lunges at the player exactly five times, traveling through blocks, before using one of two projectile attacks in the following order:

  • Duke Fishron blows 21 Detonating Bubbles[4] from his mouth that follow the player at moderate speeds before exploding and dealing damage while inflicting the Wet debuff for 3–8 seconds. The Detonating Bubbles can be destroyed in a single hit from any attack or projectile, and are affected by wind. Duke Fishron will either move to the top left or top right of the player's location before starting this attack. The Sharkron attack has the opposite direction of this attack but changes each time Duke Fishron is summoned.
  • Duke Fishron waves his fins, summoning two Sharknado Bolts that move in bottom-left and bottom-right directions (bypassing any platforms) until they travel 1.5× the vertical size of the screen or land on solid blocks or liquids. The bolts then disperse and spawn Sharknados: giant water tornadoes which are 29 tiles high, last 9 seconds[5], and each fire six Sharkrons directly at the player. Sharkrons have limited flight range, are destroyed upon colliding with blocks, and can be killed directly by the player.

Second phase

When Duke Fishron's health falls below 50% (30,000 / 39,000 / 49,725), he remains stationary for a second and transforms ((Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) and remains invulnerable to damage while transforming). Upon transitioning into his second phase, Duke Fishron's skin becomes a darker green and his eyes will begin glowing a bright yellow. Duke Fishron's damage and speed increase significantly, but his defense is reduced to 40. His lunges also become faster and are only performed three times instead of five before executing one of his projectile attacks, which are also upgraded:

  • Detonating Bubbles are now fired while Duke Fishron flies in quick loops, leaving a trail of bubbles behind him. This attack fires a total of 31 Detonating Bubbles[6], and will start in the same location relative to the player as the first phase's Detonating Bubble attack.
  • Duke Fishron now only fires one Sharknado Bolt, but it will quickly home in on the player and create a Cthulunado[sic] on the ground directly underneath them (if the player is 95 tiles (190 feet) above the surface directly below them, the bolt will instead detonate on top of them). Cthulunados are significantly larger than Sharknados (58 tiles high, 23 tiles wide, 11 tiles from the center), last for 14 seconds[5], and will spawn twice as many Sharkrons while dealing double the contact damage of regular Sharknados. Additionally, the Sharkrons fired from Cthulunados deal higher amounts of damage to the player than they do ordinarily from Sharknados.

Third phase

Expert Mode-Only Content: This information applies only to Expert Mode and Expert Mode worlds.

When Duke Fishron's health is reduced to below 15% (11,700 / 14,917), he will stop moving in order to transform again as the background becomes covered in a dark, blue fog. Duke Fishron turns invisible, but his eyes still glow. His contact damage is reduced to 184 / 277, his defense will drop all the way to 0, and he will only attack by charging at the player, but gains the ability to teleport near them before doing so. Duke Fishron momentarily becomes visible as he is charging at the player, and his charges will be performed in a set pattern:

  • First, he will charge once before teleporting.
    • Upon entering the third phase, the first teleport will always be to the side of the screen where this phase started.
  • Then, he will charge twice, and teleport to the side that is the opposite of the previous teleport.
  • Finally, he will charge three times, teleport to the same side as the previous teleport, and the pattern will reset.

After being defeated, the background will return to normal.

Enraged state

Desktop versionConsole versionMobile version
Desktop/Console/Mobile-Only Content: This section's information applies only to the Desktop, Console, and Mobile versions of Terraria.

Straying too far from the surface Ocean area during the fight causes Duke Fishron to "enrage", causing him to lunge at the player continuously, deal double damage, gain double defense, as well as becoming faster and firing more frequent and faster Cthulunados.

The "surface Ocean area" is limited in both horizontal and vertical directions. The player is only considered to be in this area if they are within the following bounds:[1]

  • Horizontal: within 400 tiles from the (unreachable) true world edge (about 360 tiles from the visible world edge).
  • Vertical: more than 50 tiles away from the top of the world (about 10 tiles from the visible top of the world), and above the underground layer.

Debuffs

Upon hitting the player in Expert Mode(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) or Master Mode(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions), Duke Fishron has a 1/3 (33.33%) chance to inflict Bleeding and a 1/3 (33.33%) chance to inflict Feral Bite. He can only inflict one of the two debuffs at a time, never both at once.

Despawning

Duke Fishron will despawn if all players are dead or if the targeted player is more than 350 tiles away from him.[1]

Notes

  • Duke Fishron will not despawn because of the biome or time of day.
  • In Get fixed boi(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) and Don't dig up(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) worlds, Duke Fishron will drop the Aqua Scepter instead of the Bubble Gun.
  • The following conditions regarding outer circumstances need to be met for being able to summon him:[7]
    • The player is within 380 tiles from the (unreachable) true world edge (about 340 tiles from the visible world edge).
    • The bobber is in a pool of water or lava which is larger than 1000 tiles (following the lake size rules) or in a pool of honey which is larger than 668 tiles.
    • Duke Fishron is currently not alive anywhere in the world.
      • (Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) It is impossible for multiple Duke Fishrons to be spawned, as the glitch with multiple fishing lines was patched in the 1.4.0.1 update.
  • Nintendo 3DS version Despite being a relatively difficult Hardmode boss, Duke Fishron only drops Lesser Healing Potions.

Tips

For more elaborate strategies on defeating Duke Fishron, including weapon and arena recommendations, see Guide:Duke Fishron strategies.
  • (Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) The player should keep in mind their current distance from the Ocean that the boss was spawned at, to prevent him from becoming enraged and making the fight unnecessarily more difficult.
  • The Inferno Potion can come in very handy during this fight to prevent taking any damage from Duke's homing bubble attacks. Since they are destroyed when damaged, the Inferno Potion's ring of fire will block them off completely.
  • Players can build a platform along the top of the Ocean to avoid sinking. Water Walking Boots or Water Walking Potions can be used as a substitute for platforms.
  • Duke Fishron's charges aim for where the player is, not where they will be. Because of this, moving perpendicularly with his charges will cause him to completely miss. Dodging his charges can be as simple as moving in a zig-zag pattern or a triangle, or utilizing equipment such as the Shield of Cthulhu or Tabi.
  • (3DS version) He is the only boss that is immune to the Stunned debuff, making Heart Arrows useless against him.
  • As Cthulunados might be hard to see during nighttime, it is recommended to fight Duke Fishron during the day or use visual aids like the Shine Potion and Hunter Potion.
  • Using an Anti-Gravity Hook(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) on a block and continuously going in circles can successfully allow dodging every attack and dash from the boss when it is enraged.
  • In Expert Mode(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions), the Shield of Cthulhu can be used to great effect, providing brief invincibility frames when dashing into him.
  • Due to Duke Fishron's fast speed in its third phase, it is suggested to use platforms in the arena to assist the player's movement.
  • Though his difficulty makes him a post-Plantera or Golem boss, it is possible to defeat him before the mechanical bosses. Obtaining his weapons this early will make a significant portion of Hardmode (including the fights against the mechanical bosses) much easier to progress through.

Trivia

  • Duke Fishron is the only boss with more debuff immunities in his second phase than in his first.
  • Duke Fishron was originally part of an April Fool's joke by Re-Logic that claimed an "Aquarian Horde" event was to be included in the game. The Duke Fishron element alone ended up being introduced.
  • In the Wii U Wii U edition, Duke Fishron's eyes will only glow when transforming and summoning Cthulunados during his second phase.
  • Duke Fishron's Sharknado attack is an allusion to the 2013 American made-for-television disaster film Sharknado.
  • Duke Fishron turns transparent when over blocks, much the same way that Pigrons do.
  • The sprite of Duke Fishron's Treasure Bag more resembles an actual pig, as it lacks the fangs that Duke Fishron has.
  • (Old-gen console and 3DS versions) Duke Fishron drops an absurdly low amount of coins compared to other Hardmode bosses, despite being one of the toughest to defeat.
  • Duke Fishron's weapon drops have considerably low reforge costs compared to other weaponry acquired around the same time.
  • Duke Fishron (and by extension, the Cute Fishron) appears to be a combination of a shark, a pig, and a dragon. Cenx confirmed that the Pigron was a cross between the latter two creatures, which further proves this theory.
  • The Cthulunado could be a reference to Cthulhu's avatar the "Father of All Sharks".[8]
  • While fishing with a Truffle Worm in the Ocean while the Sonar Potion's effect is active, no text is shown for indicating Duke Fishron is about to be summoned.
  • Duke Fishron is the only boss with three distinct phases, one being Expert Mode-exclusive.
  • Along with the Empress of Light(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) and Queen Slime(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions), Duke Fishron is one of the only Hardmode bosses that does not have to be defeated to progress the game.
  • (Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) Duke Fishron is one of seven bosses with exclusive boss music, the others being the Queen Bee, Deerclops, Queen Slime, Empress of Light, Plantera, and Moon Lord.
  • The BestiaryBestiary entry for Duke Fishron: "An aquatic pigron mutation from the depths of the ocean who surfaces in search of a rare, savory type of worm."
  • This suggests that Duke Fishron is a mutated Pigron.

History

  • Desktop 1.4.4:
    • Health increased from 50,000 to 60,000.
    • Health scaling factor in Expert/Master increased from 1.6× to 1.65×.
    • Now is invincible after being summoned, and during his phase transitions.
    • Fixed an issue where Duke Fishron's Cthulunado would sometimes instantly spawn on the player and hurt them, unavoidably. It should now spawn a certain distance below the player if there is no floor or platforms directly below, allowing the player time to avoid it.
    • When enraged, Duke Fishron is much faster, and now fires more frequent and faster Cthulunados.
  • Desktop 1.4.0.5: Should now properly retarget another player in Multiplayer when the currently targeted player dies or teleports away.
