Queen Bee is a pre-Hardmode boss. She is summoned by breaking the Larva inside Bee Hives of the Underground Jungle, or by using an Abeemination anywhere within the Jungle. She can inflict the Poisoned debuff.

While Queen Bee is alive, the music Boss 5 will play. When Otherworldly music (Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) is enabled, the track Boss 1 (Otherworldly) will play instead.

Attacks

Queen Bee has three distinct attack patterns:

  • She will level herself horizontally with the player and fly back and forth three times in an attempt to ram the player.
  • She will spawn Bees while hovering (which will include larger ones in Expert mode), which attack the player. During this time the variables for how many bees she summons could be 6, 12 or 18.
  • Similar to Hornets, Queen Bee will rapidly fire poisonous stingers at the player. During this pattern, she will alternate between hovering above the player, and positioning herself to swoop in at the player from above.

In Expert Mode(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions), the speed of these attacks increases as Queen Bee takes damage.

(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) When fought outside of the Underground Jungle, Queen Bee enrages, causing her movements to be more aggressive and firing stingers at a much faster rate.

When fought on the Surface Jungle, Queen Bee will still enter an enrage state with faster and more aggressive attacks. However, this enrage state is less aggressive than if the player were to fight her in any other surface biome, such as the Ocean.

Notes

  • Different from most other bosses, Queen Bee does not despawn when far away from the player, and will move towards the player instead.
    • This means if a player were to use a Magic Mirror or any of its variants, the Queen Bee will chase them back to their spawn point no matter the distance and depending on the spawn point location, she will most likely enrage and very likely kill the player.
    • However, in For the worthy(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) worlds, Queen Bee would despawn when brought out of Jungle Biome.
    • In multiplayer, if all players currently fighting Queen Bee die at the same time and any other players are alive at the time, the Queen Bee will pursue the other players even if they are hundreds or thousands of blocks away and will only swap aggro to a different player on the death of her current target.
      • The only way to properly despawn the boss outside killing it is for all players in the world to die at once.
  • In Expert Mode, Queen Bee's charges increase both in speed and number.
    • At low health, Queen Bee can do up to six charges in a row before changing her attack.
  • The Larva can be broken by any damaging weapon, similar to a Pot, so many actions such as the Orichalcum armor's set bonus or a Star Cloak can break the Larva, causing Queen Bee to be unintentionally spawned.
    • This is especially common if there are remaining larva within the Jungle late into the game, when it is possible to hit things anywhere on the screen, even behind solid blocks. It is also possible early in the game if using a whip, which can break things behind solid blocks.
  • On the Desktop version Desktop version, Console version Console version, and Mobile version Mobile version, Bees spawned from Queen Bee itself or Beehives and mining Hive blocks will actively target other enemies, damaging and being damaged by them. When there is at least one Bee exist, the Queen Bee will also be able to damage and take damage from other enemies. Queen Bee will only actively target players, however.
  • Once Queen Bee is defeated, the Witch Doctor NPC will spawn if there is a vacant house.
  • Bees do not drop Souls of Light, Souls of Night, Biome Keys(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions), or Biome Key Molds(Old-gen console and 3DS versions).
  • In Multiplayer, Queen Bee will despawn upon the death of players just like any other boss, and will not follow them all the way back to the spawn.
  • Occasionally, a Bee Hive will be large enough to possess 2 Larvae. If a player is using a bouncing weapon such as the Water Bolt, they need to be wary of the second Larva, lest they be targeted by the newly summoned, second Queen Bee.
  • The amount of bees Queen Bee can summon is not infinite, 173 bees is the max amount of bees that can be active at once.

Tips

For more elaborate strategies on defeating Queen Bee, including weapon and arena recommendations, see Guide:Queen Bee strategies.
  • The Honey naturally found in Bee Hives can be used to craft Bottled Honey or provide passive health regeneration mid-fight. However, standing in Honey will slow down the player.
  • The Bees do little damage, but can easily become an annoyance as they can push the player around. If the player does not have a Cobalt Shield or Obsidian Shield to avoid knockback, any grappling hook can be used to anchor the player to blocks.
  • Queen Bee can be a viable source of money, dropping 5 GC upon death and being comparably simple to summon.
  • (Old-gen console version) Queen Bee should be farmed by summoner class players to craft a set of Bee armor, which is the only pre-Hardmode summoner armor set.
    • (Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) The Obsidian armor is a better choice for summoners looking to focus on whips.
  • If the Shield of Cthulhu's dash is timed well, the Queen Bee's ramming attack can be blocked.
  • For ranged players, any bow in combination with piercing arrows (such as Jester's Arrows) can be a good choice for quickly dispatching the summoned bees

Trivia

Queen Bee concept art.png
Early concept art of the Queen Bee
  • Queen Bee has the largest number of drops of any pre-Hardmode boss in the game at 15. Furthermore, she has the second-most drops of any boss, surpassed only by Plantera (a boss that is also spawned in the Underground Jungle), who has 16.
  • If the player moves too far from the Queen Bee, she will charge until she reaches them.
  • (Old-gen console and 3DS versions) Strangely, although being able to inflict the Poisoned debuff, Queen Bee is not immune to it.
  • Although rare, it is possible to obtain the Yelets(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) from Queen Bee if she is defeated after one of the Mechanical Bosses has been killed.
  • The 1.2 concept art of Queen Bee looked vastly different than the actual sprite that was implemented, and more resembled a Hornet compared to the final sprite.
  • Queen Bee is the only boss that cannot be fought an infinite number of times per world, due to her summons being non-renewable. There is a limited number of both larvae to directly summon the boss and Hive blocks to craft the Abeemination.
    • This does not apply in Journey Mode(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions), as Hive Blocks can be infinitely duplicated once 100 of them are mined and researched, and on average a Beehive can provide more than enough to meet this requirement.
    • It is also renewable on the seed celebrationmk10 (Desktop, Console and Mobile versions), as the Jungle Mimic's "stuff cannon" attack can give the player an infinite amount of both Honey Blocks and Hive Blocks.
  • Queen Bee is one of the 7 bosses with exclusive music, the others being Queen Slime, Empress of Light, Moon Lord, Plantera, Duke Fishron, and Deerclops. However, the Old-gen console version Old-gen console and 3DSNintendo 3DS version-exclusive boss Ocram reuses her music. On older updates of the Mobile version Mobile version, as well as on the Old-gen console version Old-gen console version, the Eye of Cthulhu also reuses her music.
  • The BestiaryBestiary entry for Queen Bee: "This highly aggressive monstrosity responds violently when her larva is disturbed; the honey-laden hives are her home turf."

History

  • Desktop 1.2.3: Fixed exploit where Queen Bee could get stuck in tiles and not move.
