Slimes
“You look half digested. Have you been chasing slimes again?
—
The Nurse
Slimes are the most common enemy type. They are almost always the first enemy the player encounters in a new world. They come in multiple sizes and colors, each with different health, defense, and damage. Slimes generally follow the basic Slime AI: They hop in the direction of the player and rest a short amount of time afterwards. When a slime is preparing to hop, it bobs up and down rapidly. Slimes can float in water and move significantly faster while doing so, but only the Lava Slime can float in lava.
Slimes spawned on or near the surface are usually neutral and do not chase the player during the day, unless they take damage. All slimes become hostile at night and slimes spawned underground are always hostile. Green, Blue, Red, Purple, and Yellow Slimes usually spawn on or near the surface, while Mother Slime, Baby Slime, and Black Slime can only be found underground. Pinky may appear anywhere, yet rarely. Similar to Pinky, the Golden Slime(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) may appear anywhere rarely, but only in Celebration MK 10 and Get fixed boi worlds. On Windy Days, certain slimes can spawn attached to Windy Balloons.
Most slime types drop 1–2 Gel, with exceptions noted in the table below, and also have a very small chance of dropping a Slime Staff.

Bonus drops
Certain slimes have a 1/20 (5%) chance of carrying a bonus item when spawning naturally.[1] This item can be seen inside the slime's body and will drop upon its death.
The slimes that can have bonus drops are the following:[2]
Slimes spawned from statues can never carry a bonus drop.
The following items can be dropped:[3][4]

Other bonus drops:
- In Remix and Get fixed boi worlds, slimes occasionally carry a Fallen Star instead of the other bonus drops listed above.
- The chance for this to occur is 1/3 (33.33%) and is rolled before the other bonus drops, meaning the chance of carrying one of the other bonus drops is reduced to 1/30 (3.33%) in these worlds.
- Dungeon Slimes will always have a Golden Key as a bonus drop.
- In the skyblock special seed slimes can sometimes carry Grass Seeds, Acorns, Jungle Grass Seeds and Mushroom Grass Seeds
Slimes that spawn attached to Windy Balloons can never carry any bonus drops. Instead, they have a chance to carry one of the Windy Balloon's unique items, which will also be visible in the slime's body.
Special variants
A slime containing certain items as its bonus drop will turn into a special slime variant, granting them new color and behavior. Most of special variants also change the name of the slime, and some of the variants change the base stat of the slime.
These variants do not have their own banners and Bestiary entries. Some of them can only be spawned in worlds with the Skyblock seed active when the Skyblock tile threshold is reached.
None of these variants are needed for the Gelatin World Tour achievement.

Notes
- Smaller slimes may clip through walls and one block-wide holes.Verify
- The Royal Gel(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) accessory (dropped by King Slime in Expert Mode) turns all slimes passive (i.e., behaving neutral and not dealing damage), with the exception of King Slime, Queen Slime, and their exclusive minions.
- Conveyor Slimes, Granite Slimes, Marble Slimes and Web Slimes also spawn in the cavern layer of non-Skyblock worlds in pre-Hardmode.Verify
Achievements

Tips
- Combat can be avoided by standing close to a slime and waiting for them to jump over, as most Surface slimes are passive during the day.
- Due to the small hitbox of slimes, broadswords or melee weapons attacking in an arc are preferable to projectile weapons. Exceptions to this exist, such as controllable magic weapons like the Flamelash or Magic Missile.
- Farming slimes with a Slime Statue can produce an infinite amount of Gel. This an easy way to obtain ammunition for the Flamethrower and Elf Melter.
- A Slime Statue can also be used to farm for a Slime Staff.
Trivia
- Slimes are hinted to be made of a digestive substance by the Nurse in her dialogue: "You look half digested. Have you been chasing slimes again?"
- Most of the basic Slimes' Bestiary entries mention Slimes taking a long time to digest anything; this could be the explanation for the bonus drops they sometimes carry.
- The fact that Slimes are usually a player's first enemy encounter is referenced in the painting First Encounter.
- According to the Collector's Edition trading card of the Blue Slime, there is a single source where all the slimes originate, and destroying that source will make the slimes vanish from the world. However, no such source exists in the game.
- Grasshoppers use the same AI as slimes, which causes them to float in water.
- The following types of slimes appear in the video game Palworld as a part of a crossover: Green Slime, Blue Slime, Red Slime, Purple Slime, Illuminant Slime, and Rainbow Slime.
Bestiary entries
- Bunny Slime: "Is it a slime in a bunny costume? Or is it a bunny in a slime costume? Halloween can be very confusing sometimes."
- Present Slimes: "A perfectly gift wrapped bundle of slime. A wonderfully deadly present for any festive occasion."
