The Snapthorn in action.

The Snapthorn is a pre-Hardmode whip crafted out of Jungle materials. Like other whips, it causes minions and sentries to focus on the last-struck enemy and increases their damage against the target by 6.

If the Snapthorn hits multiple targets in a single attack, the damage dealt by each consecutive hit will be reduced by 40%. Upon striking an enemy, the Snapthorn has a 1/5 (20%) chance to inflict the Poisoned debuff on enemies for 3 seconds, and will also grant the Jungle's Fury buff, increasing attack speed by 12% for 3 seconds. The buff's duration can be refreshed by hitting enemies with the Snapthorn again.

Its best modifier is Legendary.

Tips

  • Due to the nature of Snapthorn's Jungle's Fury buff, switching to another whip while the buff is active will increase its speed for a brief duration.
  • Between the Leather Whip and Snapthorn, it is usually easier to obtain the Snapthorn first as it is made from craftable materials, while the Leather Whip requires the Zoologist to be present and costs 10 GC. Depending on the player's preference, it may be worthwhile for summoners to venture into the Underground Jungle to collect materials to craft the Snapthorn in the early game, despite the dangers of the biome.
  • Because tag damage adds a fixed amount of damage per hit, the Snapthorn works well with rapidly-attacking minions like Flinxes and Vampire Frogs, but works poorly with slow minions like Imps.
  • If the player can switch weapons fast enough, they can get all the melee speed buffs from the Snapthorn, the Durendal, and the Dark Harvest at the same time. Strike an enemy with one, then select the next, and finally select the last whip and receive its bonus. However, this strategy is very impractical without other bonuses, because by the time the player selects the last whip, the first buff might have already run out. The strategy could be complemented by equipping the Obsidian armor, or by only using two of the whips at a time.

History

  • Desktop 1.4.4.8:
    • Duration of Poisoned decreased from 4 to 3 seconds.
    • Chance to inflict Poisoned decreased from 100% to 20%.
  • Desktop 1.4.4:
    • Knockback increased from 1 to 1.5.
    • Attack speed bonus from Jungle's Fury reduced from 20% to 12%.
    • Now requires 15 Stingers instead of 12, and 12 Jungle Spores instead of 3.
    • Fixed an issue where the whip speed buff would incorrectly apply the buff to melee weapons.
