The Pirate Staff in use.
The Pirate Staff is a Hardmode summon weapon that spawns a Pirate minion, which attacks nearby enemies by pursuing and leaping onto the closest target while slashing at them with a small sword. Pirate minions attack enemies at a rate of once every 0.3 seconds per damaged enemy and trigger local immunity frames. Like other minions, the summoned Pirate is invincible and follows the player for an unlimited amount of time, unless the player dies, summons a replacement minion, cancels the buff, or leaves the world.
The Pirate Staff has a (Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) 1/1000 (0.1%) / (Old-gen console and 3DS versions) 1/2000 (0.05%) chance to be dropped by regular pirates (except Parrots) during the Pirate Invasion event. The Pirate Staff has an increased (Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) 1/250 (0.4%) / (Old-gen console and 3DS versions) 1/500 (0.2%) chance to be dropped from Pirate Captains, and a higher (Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) 1/15 (6.67%) / (Old-gen console and 3DS versions) 1/100 (1%) chance to be dropped by the Flying Dutchman(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions).
Its best modifier is Ruthless. The Mythical modifier provides the widest array of stat bonuses, but these primarily affect the initial summon rather than the resulting minion. Additionally, minions cannot deal critical hits. The only lasting advantage a Mythical Pirate Staff has over a Ruthless one is knockback.
Notes
- The Pirate Staff is quite the rare item. On average, it will take 6–7 complete Pirate Invasions before this item drops (assuming the player can kill two Flying Dutchmen and 200 pirates per invasion).
- In Celebrationmk10(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) and Get fixed boi(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) worlds, the Pirate Staff can be purchased from the Princess for 5 GC after a Pirate Invasion has been defeated.
- The pirates will defecate occasionally ((Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) similar to the effect of activating a Toilet). This has no functional effect.
- This occurs every 30–40 seconds of the pirate not moving horizontally.[1]
The three variations of the minion's feces.
Tips
- The Pirate Staff is exceptionally deadly against ground-based enemies and bosses, or enemies with multiple segments such as The Destroyer, as each pirate will deal its full listed damage on every segment.
- Because the pirates are grounded minions with a limited jump height, the Pirate Staff is ineffective against flying enemies and bosses with very high mobility, such as The Twins.
Trivia
A parrot carrying a pirate minion.
- Each time the pirate minion is summoned, it will randomly take on one of three possible sprite graphics, all of which are functionally identical. In the game code, they are called the "One Eyed Pirate", "Pirate Captain", and "Soulscourge Pirate".
- The "One Eyed Pirate" variant seems to resemble a miniature version of the Pirate Deadeye enemy.
- The pirates seem to use a miniature version of the Falcon Blade when attacking.
- This item is one of several crossover references to the game Pixel Piracy.
- The pirates' defecation behavior is similar to their behavior in the Pixel Piracy game.
- If the player strays too far from a pirate, a parrot will carry it back to the player.
