The Pygmy Staff is a Hardmode summon weapon. It spawns a pygmy character that follows the player and attacks enemies via a ranged spear attack. Like other minions, the summoned pygmy is invincible and follows the player for an unlimited amount of time, unless the player dies, summons a replacement minion, or cancels the buff. The Pygmy Staff is dropped by Plantera with a 25% (1/4) / 50% (1/2) chance.
For an item that operates similarly, see Chain.

summon
Rope is an item that primarily provides quick vertical mobility. It can be placed adjacent to blocks in any direction, or in midair where background walls exist. Once placed, Rope is used by pressing up or down while moving over it. Streamers operate identically to Rope, but cannot be crafted into Rope Coils.

All Rope variants operate identically, but are acquired in different ways.
* Rope is purchased from the Merchant for 10 each, and can be found randomly in Chests, Slimes, and Pots.
* Vine Rope is acquired by destroying Vines while the Guide to Plant Fiber Cordage is equipped in a non-vanity accessory slot. It is the only rope type that doesn't have a sell value.
* Silk Rope is crafted from one Silk, producing 30 Silk Rope, at the Loom.
* Web Rope is crafted from one Cobweb, producing 3 Web Rope, by hand.

Visually, the player appears to move along Rope using a mechanical tool with wheels, as though they were riding a rail (this tool appears automatically when using Rope, and does not exist as a separate item).

Vertical movement speed on Rope equals that of a freefall, though moving down via Rope and hitting the ground will not cause Fall Damage. Sideways movement is also possible, by placing adjacent Rope horizontally, but is much slower. Rope can be placed atop existing placed Rope, which will extend the total length of the rope downward, without the player actually having to be at the bottom of the Rope column.

10 Rope can be crafted into a Rope Coil, which produces the same resulting Rope placement, but cannot be placed directly. It is instead thrown at blocks. On impact, a Rope Coil becomes a placed vertical stack of ten Ropes. If the throw misses blocks, it drops as the Rope Coil item. If it impacts but cannot extend down 10 tiles due to other blocks in the way, the excess Ropes drop as Rope items. Rope Coils cannot be hung in midair from background walls, as the ordinary Rope item can.

Notes
* Summoned pygmies do not deal damage themselves. Instead, they attack by throwing spears twice per second.
* All varieties of rope include a "+3 range" attribute, not unlike Wrenches and wire cutters, that allows the item to be used from further away. As in the case of the wrenches and wire cutters, this does not affect players utilizing placed ropes.
** Spears do not pierce enemies, and vanish on the first target hit.
* Ascent speed is 41 mph. Descent speed is 51 mph.
** Spears do not prevent other spears from hitting the same target however, so overall damage per second increases linearly with the addition of more pygmies.
** Spears have a 2/3 chance to inflict the Poisoned debuff for 10-21 seconds, and a 1/3 chance to inflict Venom, for the same duration. One of the two is always inflicted.
* Summoned pygmies' aims are somewhat inaccurate, so they might miss even relatively close and static targets, let alone moving ones.
* The Pygmy Staff item needs to reside in the player's inventory in order for the Witch Doctor to sell the Hercules Beetle, Pygmy Necklace and the Tiki armor.

Tips
Trivia
* Each time the Pygmy is summoned, it randomly has one of four possible sprite graphics. However, they are all functionally identical.
* Rope works very well for building Hellevators because players descend at the same speed as free-fall, and ascend fairly quickly as well. It's very easy to obtain and can be placed at the top of the Hellevator over and over again to bring the rope all the way down.
* The pygmy catches up to fast-moving players by flying while standing, sitting, or hanging on its spear.
* The player can also place rope even if the top is anchored to nothing, and can even extend it skyward, the only requirement being that the original rope is anchored to a block or background wall. This can be used to easily access Floating Islands: build a rope column upwards while climbing skyward. Similarly, rope can be used quickly ascend to the surface when you are exploring the ocean.
* Each of the Pygmy’s colors (purple, blue, red, yellow/orange) seem to represent the colors of the 4 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Donnatello (purple), Leonardo (blue), Michelangelo (orange), and Raphael (red).
* Flying into a rope and continuing to move on the rope will maintain the velocity of flight.
* It can be found in the game files on the mobile version
* Making silk rope instead of cobweb rope is better as silk requires less amounts of cobweb thus allowing the player to make more rope. (The difference of the amount of ropes is 9. you can get 30 silk ropes for the value of 21 web ropes.)

A pygmy standing by a player's side.

Its best modifier is Ruthless. The Mythical modifier provides the widest array of stat bonuses, but these primarily affect the initial summon rather than the resulting minion. Additionally, minions cannot deal critical hits. The only lasting advantage a Mythical Pygmy Staff has over a Ruthless one is knockback.

Notes

  • Summoned pygmies do not deal damage themselves. Instead, they attack by throwing spears twice per second.
    • Spears do not pierce enemies, and vanish on the first target hit.
    • Spears do not prevent other spears from hitting the same target however, so overall damage per second increases linearly with the addition of more pygmies.

  • Summoned pygmies' aims are somewhat inaccurate, so they might miss even relatively close and static targets, let alone moving ones.
  • The Pygmy Staff item needs to reside in the player's inventory in order for the Witch Doctor to sell the Hercules Beetle, Pygmy Necklace and the Tiki armor.
